The thing with the Harry Potter books is that you are hooked after the first few chapters of the first book. I don't know of anyone who got more than a couple of chapters in, and did not then read the whole bloody series in a big rush.

My current literary recommendation - Matthew Reilly. He's a Sydney boy (well, same age as me, roughly) who writes the most amazing action I have ever read. Basically, all of his books are written-word versions of unlimited-budget, ten-hour action movies. The action in them simply doesn't stop. His first published novel, Ice Station, is his best by far - sadly, none of his later books have quite matched it - and it is an amazing read. The story moves so quickly you literally cannot put it down. He admitted in the afterword of one of his books that he deliberately puts any pauses mid-chapter, and tries to get a cliffhanger on the end of every chapter. He can't write characters or dialogue for shit, but his action and knowledge of technology are first-rate.

Apparently he has started being published in the US and UK now, so I highly recommend picking up one of these...

Contest - His first book, turned down by every publisher in Sydney, then self-published. Was re-printed after Ice Station.
Ice Station - His best by far. Incredibly fast-paced, huge fun.
Temple - Also great fun, but not as fast, not as believable, and simply not as good as Ice Station.
Area 7 - His second-best, in my opinion. A sequel to Ice Station, a lot of fun, quite funny in parts.

Actually I've been a silent partner all along. I avoided most of the Harry Potter threads cause I didn't want to read any spoilers. I read Chamber of Secrets about 5 months ago and like I said am about to start The Sorceror's Stone. (Backwards as usual.)

I did think the plot of Chamber of Secrets was a little light, being a kids book. However, this was made up for by how incredibly well written it was, and especially by how much fun learning the new vernacular was. (Anyone else find themselves calling people muggles and mudbloods for awhile after the first read?)

Learning the Potter-ese reminded me of this interactive fiction game I played once where you were an early human living in prehistoric europe. You had to go to a neighboring hut to get medicinal herbs for your ailing wife. However, next door was a man that didn't speak your language. So, in this little freeware interactive fiction game, you had to learn his language to get the herb. You'd do it by imitating his speech and noting his verbal or bodily response or by pointing at something and then listen to him speak about what you just pointed at. By the time the game was over, I'd built up a 40 or 50 word vocabulary of his language, including nouns, verbs, adjectives, and sentence structure.

I digress, but that was really one of the most amazing gaming experiences I've ever had. (To further my geekness rating.) I'll try to find the link if anyone's interested.

I LOVE that thing.

I had that, the Interactive tech manual for the NCC-1701-D, the Borg interactive episode, and the Star Trek 25 anniversary adventure game.

Incidentally, I highly recommend the books by Christopher Brookmyre, especially "Not the end of the world" which is about some Christian fundamentalists trying to sabotage a pornographic film festival.
