It's the end of a school, like High School or College. Some Jr. Highs, and gradeschools have graduation, but not all. All high schools in the US (that I know of) have graduation, as do all colleges.

I have to assume this was at one time a UK tradition too, though over time, many traditions stayed in, were invented in, and discarded of in America.

I never graduated.

Yeah, I had to wear a gown when I graduated from Uni. No mortarboard, though, although I think that just depends on the university.

When I graduated from high school it was just formal wear, really, so I spent the night suffering from kilt paranoia.

Never wear shiny shoes with your kilt - evil gitls will try to see a reflection of your genitals. It's true!
