My Apologies - I've Just Ripped Off A Comic Or Two... by RopeDrink
9-05-02
You wanna get down and sucky sucky on this for six dollah and sixty six cent, bitch?
No thanks!
I don't think you have a choice here... Hey, what the...
*KER-TRANSFORM*
Toboricons!
I ARE THE ONE WHO WILL BE GETTING THE SUCKING!

I am sorry to say that I have (In a very unfunny manner) ripped off two idea's I read from a few comic series and blended them.

Maybe it was just to compliment how funny those idea's where :D

Tobor and the Give The Devil His Due were damn funny!
Anyway, sorry again.
/me awaits to be spanked.

Spare me some change, guv!?
Awww, poor homeless person. Hold on, I got my wages today. The guts of $500! Im sure I *could* spare you some coins.
Oh, but whats this? They paid me by check? Tut Tut, such a pity!
Bastard

I like this a lot, because like the best of comedy it's got the sting of realism in it.

ScriptCreator in-jokes aren't really my thing, it has to be said, but there's some good stuff in here anyway.

Speaking of ripping people off, I have several strips that do this, mainly "Sloth", writen 1-08-02, is a complete ripoff of a habnem strip(I think its habnem). I never acknowledged him for it, only meant to continue his joke. However, it's not to the scale of Tobor, which no one acknowledges boorite for, so it's different.

That said, I didn't think your comics were funny.

Oops - Forgot to say thanks to DexColonel for the support...

It's a bit of a bitch being here in college and suffering from immense boredom, hence the majority of my comics being ill thought out, boring and unfunny contributions to this rather great site...

I wont apologise for being boring, simply because Im doing what this site was made for - And thats make comics.

It's DUX, man. As in Latin. But hey, it's a silly name, you're allowed to get it wrong. :>

An important thing for comic creation to remember: sometimes silence is funnier than words. In the strip I pointed at as being good, it wasn't necesary for the beggar to say anything else. Leaving some things to the imagination ("What would that dude think if I showed him I had a $500 check but no cash?") can be far funnier than what you can write.

Also, spelling and proper English and stuff I find always helps the feel of a comic. It's a minor thing, but when I see all lower/upper case comics, or l337 speak or whatever, be it in emails, text messages or comci strips, I always find it eats at the credibility, and that's important for humour: as I said, a sting of real life keep it going. Hence me mocking this in:

The Last Generation Of People With Language Skills by duxcolonel

I'm always amazed that sensible, articulate people lose all their skills when left in front of a keyboard or mobile phone.
I got a completely indecipherable message from Pam. "Wll fne u l8r 4 2nte"? What happened to our language, dude?"
I fear what the future genrations will think of us if they find what counts as our records.
I mean, hey, you always post your emails with charming grammar, don't you? Semi colons and everything.
I. Thy ddnt say "sck," thy sed "suXXX0rz!""
U r cer10 tht 21st cntry humn spke so prly?

and slightly less funnily in:

Again, thanks for the feedback.
In regards to the l337 speak used in my previous comics, they were made quite a long time before I came back to stripcreator (i.e. I had to take a break [against my will - losing the net at home is, sometimes, an infuriating experience] but now that Im back and I've checked out my comics, I realised how utterly pathetic they were... And still are...)

I rarely make them anymore...

Im currently a mod on Boards.ie where my usual constructiveness is towards creating CS / HL / DOD / TFC / Unreal / SC / BW / Kingpin maps, or writing novels (Unfunny ones) yet when it comes to something like (Some would say 'simple') comic making I am at a complete loss...

Still - There's always the possibility that I'll learn / get an actual *good* idea, and finally make a decent comic...

Again, thanks for your patience and attempt at helping me understand the wily ways of comic creation :)

Much appreciated.

The funny thing is, I hadn't read your early l337-sp34k comics, but I had a feeling there'd be one buried in your past. ;-)

Anyway, yeah, I'm glad I'm being helpful. I've only been on this site for a few days but I like to think my wisdom from years of general net use can help people come to terms with the English language and it's odd nuances. And I would love to see your unfunny novels, just to verify the lack of comedy. :>

After reading some of your strips, I have an interesting piece of information about the English language that might come in handy in your strips:

People read from the left to the right.

Yeah, I try to go for the classic comic strip feel of "the higher bubble gets priority" usually, but it just doesn't seem to flow right in StripCreator for some reason. I think it's because "real" comics can bend, raise etc the bubbles to stress the point.

This means that some comics, I for some odd reason want to have the characters facing one way but speaking in a certain order and it all looks silly.

At least I know it's not me, now, and I hope some of my later ones have shown I've stopped that nasty, nasty habit of mine.

It can be tricky, but you can usually get around it by simply swapping the characters over in all three panels, shifting the dialogue balloons left or right, or compressing multiple balloons into one.

The keyword here is: planning. Plan your strip out. If it doesn't work, remember that Crtl+X and Ctrl+V are your friends.

You're quite right, but then that was always my problem with programming: I would just do whatever the problem was, then have to fake all the planning stages. :>

Anyway, yeah, making more not amazing but slightly funny comics has been delayed by my nabbing of the 9 Trek films and 4 episodes of Voyager for £18 (This is, in case exchange rates confuses anyone, rather damn cheap) so I'll get back to you, er, later. :>
