Also, I don't know if it occurred to any of you, but you don't HAVE to donate a nice big round even number. If you can swing $5, hey, that's $5 more that brad has to pay for the site than he did before you donated.

Everyone seems to be waiting until they can scrape together $20 because they don't want to seem cheap... but how many months go by with you not managing to set that $20 aside, and how many fivers here or there are you blowing on dumb crap that you could be paypal-ing to brad in the meanwhile?

Hell, if you can't swing $5, try $2.

If you can't afford anything, THEN DON'T FREAKIN WORRY ABOUT IT. That's what optional donation is all about.

This very topic was addressed this past week in the news updates at 8-bit Theater.

My own thoughts on the subject are much the same as those already voiced. I'd add one thing: if you're still in school, you should definitely not feel bad about not donating to any websites that you visit. I did when I was in school. Then I got out and got a job, and all of a sudden I was like, where did all this money come from? Now, I mean, I'm not rich by anybody's standards, but still, there's a lot more money in my bank account now that I'm working full-time than there was when I was going to school full-time. So, if you're an impoverished student, don't worry about it. The rest of us will pick up your slack until you get a real job. :)

waitaminute. What happened here? I wasnt looking for replies necessarily, I was just happy that I DID donate. By the way I didn't donate "a big round number" lol. Not by any means. I happened to have some Canadian money left over from my trip to montreal, and given that Brad is Canadian and I had been meaning to donate, I sent him 13 dollars of the 58 I had left.

It did look a little bit like you were fishing for a positive feedback, but... like I said, that's ok in small amounts, I think. If it encourages poeople to donate, cool.

... Oh yeah, and before Neovid gets his panties in a twist, I wasn't specifically talking about him either. I was talking about the tendency of people in general to talk about donating and never get around to it. Not only doesn't it help, but it makes the site admin feel uncomfortable.

Site admins for cool sites such as these already feel awkward asking for dough because they went into their projects looking to make something cool, not to make a buck... so when they ask for donations, they have this little nagging feeling that they're asking too much. So they get this uncomfortable feeling of being like a slumlord demanding 4 months of back rent from a 90 year old lady whenever people talk about how they'll donate as soon as they have a few bucks.

The best and most subtle way to show that you've donated is to give yourself a cool forum title. Another good way is to say, "Hey cool! I can delete my bad strips now!" or something similar.

I'm an Australian. We are even less tolerant than most of people who seem to be fishing for praise. It's a facet of the infamous "Tall Poppy Syndrome" that most of us share.
