I called my CD the "No Earthly Business" mix, because in some cases, these songs have no earthly business being on the same CD. Here are the tracks, in order:
Ana Ng – They Might Be Giants
This was the first TMBG song I ever heard. The phrase “And we still haven’t walked in the glow of each other’s majestic presence†made an impression on me. I listened to some more TMBG and I was immediately hooked. See, Brooklyn, NY produced other cool things besides me.
Wish – Franka Potente and Thomas D
This song is from the movie Ron Lola Run, which I highly recommend viewing. Franka Potente is hot.
Where Do I Begin – Shirley Bassey, remixed by Awayteam
There is something about this song that makes my hips move of their own accord. It’s also a great song to listen to while lying in bed and staring at the ceiling.
Female of the Species – Space
More deadly than the male? You bet. Get over it! Great song.
The World’s Address – They Might Be Giants
Clever lyrics, a pun (too bad Kaufman wasn’t in my group), has a good beat, and you can dance to it. Kickassedness.
Jockey Full of Bourbon – Moxy Früvous
This is a cover of a Tom Waits song. I’ve only heard the Moxy version, but Moxy’s my favorite band, so that’s good enough for me. The song itself is another one of those moves-my-hips-for-me type songs.
She Has a Girlfriend Now – Reel Big Fish
Ska, lesbianism, a guy pledging to cut his penis off to win her back, a chick’s melodious laughter. Not for the weak.
Road Rage – Jimmy Fallon
The first time I heard this song, I was driving home from work. It cracked me up so much I almost had to pull over. My favorite line is the one that begins, “If honkin my horn don’t get your attention…â€
Rocket Man – Me First and the Gimme Gimmes
This is the speed at which the song needs to be played. That’s all there is to it.
Michigan Militia – Moxy Früvous
I love this song, but I considered not putting it on. It’s a somewhat subtle dig at a type of people whose views don’t jibe with those of Moxy Früvous. I worry that someone might miss the subtlety (or think that I missed the subtlety) and think I actually agree with the views of the characters in the song. Hopefully you guys know me better than that.
Divorce Song – Liz Phair
Liz Phair helped me get through a lot of break-ups with her attitude about men. This is just one of the many songs I love from the album Exile In Guyville.
Why Haven’t I Heard From You – Reba McEntire
I dislike country. Immensely. However, there is something about this song that made me dig it. I sang it at karaoke once, but didn’t do it justice. I’ll stick with twanglessness in the future.
Rusty Cage – Johnny Cash
I have to wonder if Mr. Cash is actively selecting songs to cover, or if he has some sort of assistant who hands him the sheet music and says “do thisâ€. Is it a joke, or is he serious? He’s actually really pretty awesome at these covers. William Shatner’s got nuthin on him.
Just Dropped In – Kenny Rogers & The First Edition
Anyone who’s ever experimented with mind expansion knows what this is all about. I mean, anyone knows what it’s about, but the ones who’ve done it REALLY know.
Spanish Fly – Muckafurgason
The music is beautiful, the story is amusing, and the line, “¿Que es tu problemo?†cracked me up, where it is in the song.
Your New Boyfriend – Moxy Früvous
This song is probably more directly indicative of Moxy’s politics. Yes, it’s more Moxy. I TOLD you they’re my favorite band.
Leather – Tori Amos
Tori Amos was the woman who first made me aware that I’m not completely heterosexual. She is a goddess... in leather. ::melt::
Ice Cream – Sarah McLachlan
Describing love as being better than chocolate is exactly appropriate.
Road to Nowhere – Talking Heads
No special significance. It’s just catchy as hell and I heard it semi-recently.
What Do All the People Know – The Monroes
This one too. Gotta love the 80’s.
Too Late For Goodbyes – Julian Lennon
Okay, so I like 80s music.
All Together Now – The Beatles
This is one of my favorite Beatles songs. I dunno why.
Sheep Go To Heaven – Cake
Cake is another one of my favorite groups. No special significance for this song, just needed another upbeat one.
Naked Puppets – Moxy Früvous
On the album Live Noise, the music is interspersed with little humorous bits of improv that the guys did in various concerts. They’re all pretty amusing, but this one fit in the leftover time to make the CD 99% full. Heh.
