Maybe it's just me, but I never really dug Chevy Chase.
His Fletch is horrid in comparison to the Fletch novels. His slapstick isn't quite as good as Steve Martin's slapstick, and Steve Martin slipped in better subtle high-brow humor.
John Candy pulled off the lovable loser better.
Bill Murry was just all-around funnier.
If it wasn't for National Lampoon's Vacation, I could argue that Chevy Chase never had a TRULY funny movie. In Caddyshack, Chevy Chase was carried by a great cast overall. Chevy Chase shows in Caddyshack 2 that he really isn't funny.
