Hiya,
Tried to log onto the chat just now & couldn't.
Hope everyone is doing well - I've finally gotten divorced (thank god almighty...) and I'm working now at a major insurance company. Very good pay, good benefits, etc.
I've been working to get my property and casualty licenses in each state, have about 20 more to go.
Putting my house up for sale and moving on.
Went off the Zoloft I've been on for the last 2 years, and sometimes feel a bit melancholy and lonely, but life is good in general.
Talked to DexX the other night, he and Bec are doing well too.
I especially miss Kaufman.
Talk to me! Tell me how y'all have been.

Sweet, but I'd never go after anyone younger than 40.
And after reading Kaufman's last comic (I can't believe it's not Buddha) I don't miss him quite as much.

Careful, pita... read too many of kaufman's comics and an overdose of many puns will kill you.

Let's see... not much going on here. Well, that's not true. My mother died of cancer. Our favorite cat (Snuggles) died of cancer.

We have a new kitten (Hemi, a.k.a ActionCat) with an insatiable appetite for eating and playing. She also fetches.

The older cat (Katrina, 18) just had some oral surgery and is otherwise healthy. The vet expects her to live into her 20's no problem.

My wife was approved for social security disability due to chronic pain. The downside: My wife is in pain, dammit. Oh, and all the insurance deductatbles and copays add up. The upside: The disability pay helps us keep up with those bills, so we have no debt other than mortgage and car. We get good parking with the handicapped tag.

The job is still the same.

I lost 47 pounds and gained it back during the 8 months my mother was dying. (I'm stressed! I know. I'll EAT SOMETHING!!!!) It's coming off again bit by bit.

I haven't bought any more screaming bottles of Chateauneuf Du Pape.

Hemi the kitten is playing fetch with me right now. I throw the ball across the room and she brings it right back to my feet.

:( I'm so sorry...my mother has cancer as well, if she is able to beat it this would be the second time.
She's going through chemo, lost all her hair, etc.

:( I have fibromyalgia, so I know what it's like to be in pain constantly.

WOO-HOO!!! I have lost about 20 lbs. myself recently (just imagine, only 120 more to go!) by nearly eliminating carbs from my diet and pretty much eating whatever else I want. Carbs are evil. And, get this:
one lousy can of Pepsi has about 45 grams of carbs in it. I was sucking down about 4 a day during hot summer, which equals eating 8 baked potatoes on top of all the carbs I was already consuming.

Neither have I... shame, 'tis.

Argh, there is nothing wrong with carbs. Like all foods, if you eat too much of it, its bad, and if you must eat carbs, then get them from nutritious sources like whole grain breads and fruit and not from empty calories from sodas and other refined sugars. Think about this--3/4 of the world eats either rice or potatoes with every meal and yet Americans, not the third-world, are the fatasses of the world.

What is bad? Fat. Cut that from your diet and you'll be amazed at how your own fat will disappear. That's what I hate about those no/low-carb diets--full of cheese, mayo, fatty meats, and other foods that should be avoided.

What else is bad? Too many Calories. Frankly, it doesn't matter what your food is made up of, if you're eating more than you're burning off, you'll gain weight.

What else is bad? Not moving. Exercise burns off all those pesky calories, speeds up the metabolism, and burns muscle which means you can burn calories even when you're watching Dr. Phil.

Speaking of pudgy diet gurus...I was watching Low Carb and Loving It on Food TV today--I can't stand that guy. He makes the fattiest foods and calls them healthy. While his healthy-looking son was making a salad, George was making turkey burgers filled with cheese and covered with mayo. His son scoffed at the mayo because he eats low fat, low calorie, but George called it healthy because there wasn't a bun on the burger. Like I said, his son looked in great shape (down from 300 lbs), but George's man-boobs were jiggling as he was slicing chicken and he's got a big gut. Yeah, low-carb is healthy.

So what should one eat...

--Lots of fruit and vegetables (all that fiber fills your stomach, makes you feel full, and cleans you out).

--A moderate amount of meat (Protein digests easier than carbs and much more than fat, plus it helps build muscle)

--Very low fat (you gotta have some, plus non-fat meals give you cravings. The problem is that it takes more energy to burn fat, so you don't want too much of it)

I've been there--I lost 75 lbs and have kept it off for 5 years now. I did it by eating a balanced diet (see above) and by exercising. I continue to do both to this day. I ate all my favourite foods, but made sure i limited the portions on high-fat foods or empty calories. That way, I didn't feel the need to cheat or feel guilty if I blew it one night (hey, everyone does, and any time I went to my parent's house for dinner, it was a typical midwestern meal). The trick was to stay on track and to tell myself "this is the way I eat now," not "I'm on a diet."

Sorry for the rant, but I can't stand this low-carb lie.

Choad, I agree wholeheartedly. As much sense as the Atkins diet makes, it's still not healthy, balanced eating. High proteins are good, but in moderation. And you're right about fats. It's just common sense to skin a chicken before you roast it, or avoid bacon, sausage & fatty meats.

I didn't mean all carbs are evil, I meant the ones you're talking about - empty calorie carbs. I detest the fact that I was a Pepsi-holic. That stuff is really bad for you.

I joined the fitness center where I work, we have cool contraptions like eliptical bikes and treadmills built for little old ladies like me, and a sauna. Now I just need motivation to use it more often.

And one last thing about successful weight loss - water, and lots of it!!!

RW - I'm old enough to be your mother :D

BDR - Hi, pleased to meetcha.

Hello there, Pita, nice to see you back.

I'll jump straight into the diet argument which I have with the women in my office nearly every Monday morning. I get nothing but abuse for being thin and fairly fit despite heading out for a pub lunch nearly every day, eating pasta or a wrap and having a pint of beer. What they fail to realise is that I don't go anywhere near the cakes and biscuits that they bring in to share every day, in fact the only time they mention this is when they realise I don't buy any donuts for anyone else. If I have a particularly unhealthy day of eating (large fried breakfast, meatball sub lunch, chip shop dinner, trip to the pub) I find my body is pretty quick in letting me know by feeling like shit and so I have soup, eat fruit, drink water to balance it out. Not because I've ever been fat or had a problem with my weight, just to make me feel right again. It just seems to be something in-built in my brain, nothing that I've ever had to really think about.

So as infuriating as it is to watch someone eat nothing but cereal in the office then gorge themselves on chocolate cake and wonder why they've actually GAINED weight since their last Fat Busters meeting, I can maybe understand the excuse that some people just don't have the kind of mind that allows them to lose weight. There are people I've known for years who never seem to be off some kind of diet, always trying the latest trend and still they look the same, they may brag about some number they lost recently but it's never noticeable and doesn't last (although for some I'm sure they think saying "I'm on a diet" is enough).

If you can't lose weight after a couple of diet attempts, there's something in your brain stopping it. It might not be something "wrong" as such (although people who are "morbidly obese" are definitely stupid, there is no other excuse) but if it's just some extra baggage and you can't lose it, I'm willing to bet everything I own that you never will (on your own).

Not only are empty calories bad for you, but all that acidic crap and sugar eats your teeth. Soda addictions may seem harmless, but you consume enough, and you'll have a gut and no teeth. It also strips your body of nutrients. :) Very wise of you to quit.

Diet soda is just as bad for you, if not worse, than regular soda. Here you have a chemically created cocktail of sugars (soda), and then they chemically REMOVE another chemical from it. Actually, now they don't do that. They just add different chemicals.

Hey Pita.
It's good to hear from you. All's well here.

I bought my first house, so that's fun. I also have a new puppy named Tallula (half Shepperd, half rotty according to the vet's instincts). My wife is in school to be a nurse now so she can support me so that I can eventually get a Masters in playwriting, hopefully. Just work and theatre for the most part and the occasional indie film when someone asks.

Glad you're happy and well. Don't be a stranger.=)
