They've already tried that. If Kissinger's resignation was an ethical decision, why did he take up the chairmanship in the first place, only to quit once the company he owns was threatened with bad publicity?

I was thinking more along the lines of, er, not hiring someone with vested corporate interests. But I suppose that's out of the question.

Or not hiring someone who ordered an illegal bombing and then lied to keep it secret.

But they have got quite major similarities: large, vulnerable target, symbolic attachments etc.

And the statement was made with that in mind. They wanted another attack on American soil to stir up the dullards and to buy foreign sympathy.

The symbolism of Pearl Harbor is very much a product of restrospect. The actuality of several U.S. Naval ships being bombed out of the clear blue sky and hundreds and hundreds of U.S. Naval personell being killed in those attacks is what kept it in the sight of the American consciousness long enough to evolve into apocrypha. After the Civil War, we were not supposed to ever again have war on US soil. Ever. All the big cheeses after the fact of the Civil War declared this, and -like most ideas that catch the American fancy- it was turned into some kind of mulit-committied watchdog thing. "There shall be no war on the soil of America ever again!" So.... Pearl Harbor getting bombed finally drags us kicking and screaming into WWII while Europe lies almost in ashes. Now, a whole new attack of American soil. The World Trade Centre airplane attacks. Something, I fear, stinks.

Yeah, getting struck on American soil (minus embassies, of course) always riles the country up. But then again, it's not exactly EASY to hit North America without nukes, so it's pretty noticable when they do.

The Pearl Harbor thing, however, I think is more related to America's own desire to join the war on the Allied side. They just needed another "Lusitania (WWI)," and the Japanese gave it to them.

On a frivolous note, the Japanese were dumb. They hit Pearl Harbor BUT FORGOT TO TAKE OUT THE OIL SILOS! Guess what happens because Pearl Harbor is left in ruins, but is still feasible as a ship-refueling spot.

Oh, and this whole terrorism/Iraq thing is just an attempt by W. Bush to win a war and boost his chances of re-election.

Reich wrote Listen, Little Man! in 1946 and it was published in 1948. The book is Reich's warning to the common man in all societies that he, the little, average man, is lethally responsible for the rapidly spreading social cancer of fascism. Reich had seen how common citizens in Germany embraced their enslavement by their Nazi overlords. He was now seeing the reappearance of the same phenomenon in the United States and Europe. Someone needed to tell the average citizen that his personal characteristics were at the root of the world-wide plague of totalitarianism. Read more.

This makes sense. People get desperate in times of need and turn to their leader for guidance.

Said leader takes advantage of the situation and squelches freedoms "for the interest of national security."

A complacent puplic allowing the right-wing to take over has been written about for years. Gross wrote about it in Friendly Fascism and by Sinclair Lewis in It Can't Happen Here. It is still a message that bears repeating in these dark times.

George W. Bush proves each and every day he's a lying, murderous puppet of Big Oil when he continues to talk about war in Iraq but takes a softer stance on North Korea who does have weapons of mass destruction, has kicked UN inspectors out, has done everything he's accusing Iraq of. The only things N. Korea has in its favour? 1) Doesn't have a leader Daddy didn't fully defeat. 2) Doesn't have huge oil fields. 3) Has a military that would do a lot of damage to American soldiers and interests, so would be hurtful to Shrubs approval ratings.
Right now the biggest rogue nation in the world is the United States and it's getting very close to time for a regime change.

I'm not quite sure how N. Korea's nuclear threats make Saddam any less dangerous. I think this is more of a Godfather type scenario, with Bush cast as Michael Corleone, and now he's up to the part where he takes care of all unfinished family business. THEN he'll move on to more pressing issues.

P.S. While I do hope we can neutralize Saddam, I find it sad Americans will allow civil liberties to go by the wayside. But, maybe we never REALLY did have a choice in the matter, and that our country's leaders view civil liberties as just a peace time privilege that they can suspend as needed.

Wow, you people hate Bush. But yeah he ain't that great, he couldn't possibly be worse then Reagan.

I don't think Clinton was better either. While Bush is WAY to aggressive, he was way to soft. In fact, all of our presidents have sucked in the past 20 years or so.

But anyways, I'm pretty indifferent when it comes to democrats and republicans. Politics are so jammed into peoples minds, that sometimes they blindly defend their side even if they know it may be doing wrong. I've seen it in republicans and democrats (and don't think I'm accusing anyone here of it). I kinda had to un-fuck my mind from the deep republican upbringing I was raised in. Now I'm just on the outside looking in. But if someone held a gun to my head and said choose a party. I'd say republican, not based on principles really, but just because the majority of hollywood assholes are democrats.

Anyways, just wanted to state my indifference.

Oh, and by the way. North Korea is much more dangerous then Iraq. I hope the Bush adminstration comes to its sense and looks over into the other direction to see where a REAL threat is. Those boys up there in the North aren't just spoutin' off fighting words for nothin'.

And since this is the fight forum. And this is my first post here as a NUBIE. I'd just like to say fuck each and every one of you. G'day.
