Hey, I'm a left leaning moderate, and I see extremism on either end of the spectrum as a bad thing. I've done plenty of reading on both ends, though, and the left tends to make a lot more sense than the right, in my opinion.

Anyway, what I said above is in line with my overall view on both extremes: hard right views are short-sighted, seeking short term gains and not looking to the future, while hard left views are too long-sighted, striving toward a lofty goal and forgetting to watch what's right under your nose.

See, I can criticise both sides of the argument. I'm not blinded by politics.

As I said, though, the style of strips and toons on this site is a typical conservative mistake, dealing in rules and systems and ignoring motivations and justifications. Sure, maybe left-wing ideology can over-complicate things with its "nuanced" views, but extreme right-wing ideology tries to compact everything into a sound bite, over-simplifying ideas until, like the stories on this site, they lose any sense of reality.

All just my opinion, naturally.

that's not how i'd characterize them at all. left-wing ideology isn't too complicated, it's too simple. so is right-wing ideology. what they do is take their view of life and then try to make all the facts fit it. what they should do is take the multi-colored and often-times inconsistent views of their constituents and legislate it

I think you're talking about extremists, though, not simple left- or right-leaning people. I'm talking general schools of thought, not extreme followers of these schools.

What depresses me is the lopsidedness of mainstream politics these days. In Oz and the US we have a hard-right party, and a nominal left party that are actually substantially right of centre as well, but who look left because of the extremism of the other. Even true moderates these days look like extreme lefties in comparison.

it's all relative to the people. if the parties are going right, it's probably representative of their constituents. there's no absolute right and left, just relative to the public's leanings overall. if you find yourself way left of the public's leanings, that maybe will convince you you're not a moderate.

yeah, let's just agree to disagree. i'm not a fan of politics. it's just annoying to see people always putting down the other's opinion instead of accepting it and trying to reach a consesus. it's self-serving and wreaks of absolute good-and-bad and shits on individual differences

I will concede that I started it by saying "all conservatism" when I really meant something like "extreme conservatism" or something like that.

Oh, and I don't call myself a moderate, but a strongly left-leaning moderate. I don't identify absolutely with either school of thought but tend to agree with the left more often than not.

I'm cautious of abortion, for example, not really pro or anti as each extreme requires, but, I suppose, kind of reserved but open to debate from both sides. I'm a sort of... semi-anarchic secular humanist with paternalistic tendencies and a big dose of cynicism.

I tend to ignore labels like left and right and liberal and conservaitve these days and just call myself a progressive.

Anyway, fuck all that. Let's get back to making cartoon teenagers say bad words.
