I certainly don't disagree, but I'm curious why you think that's a purely Republican phenominon...?  I'm from a land of "Yellow-Dog Democrats" -- people who would vote for a yellow dog as long as there was a "D" by his name on the ticket.

Well, to be fair and balanced, I shouldn't imply that I think it's a "purely" Republican phenomenon.  It isn't. But (my reading of contemporary opinion) there are fewer avowed Democrats that think McCain is the better candidate than avowed Republicans who think Obama is better.  People of any political affiliation have come to realize that the way the standing Republican president and his cabinet have been running things is running the country into the ground, putting McCain at a disadvantage because he's "one of them" who did this to the nation, and his use of the word "maverick" just doesn't seem to be an accurate description of him.

Funny story here in the Evergreen State that I know I've mentioned before:  The Republican candidate for governor in Washington doesn't put an R by his name, he puts "GOP".  He is currently being legally pursued by groups that believe he's trying to obscure and confuse people into thinking he's not a Republican (like McCain and Bush, thus "part of the problem") by using a synonymous term.  Which is amusing simply because when you see Dino Rossi's campaign ads and how much spin and smear they employ, it's not hard to tell which political party he's in.  And that his strategy is this: "The governor who has been doing the job for years sucks because she has to raise and spend taxpayer money like any governor must; I have no experience and won't explain how I won't spend any money but I could do the job better."

I saw the Washington gubernatorial debate, it was carried by a Portland affiliate (I suppose for the benefit of scummy 'Couverites).

Rossi seemed stiff and republican-y, but Gregoire appeared dopey and disconnected.  Good luck on choosing what box to check on that one.

Not a hard choice.  The one that has "Gregoire - D" next to it.  I can't trust a man who smears more than he shines.  And it wasn't until I was like 30 before I discovered which side of the Columbia that Vancouver is on since no matter where you look it's listed with the Oregon branches of stores, not the Washington ones.  I feel your pane.

Seven hours later, no one else has commented so I take another turn...

Palin:  Was more eloquent than I thought she'd be.  Not to say she didn't take the McCain School of Charm course on how to be condescending (does Alaska really have an accent that sounds like Minnesotan via Texas?).  That down-home thing is down home but, uh, I think she lost a few people when she started a statement with, "Oh, there you go again, Joe..."  Good to see that her lips are firmly planted on John McCain's butt.  Extra credit for assuming the tone of someone who disapproved of other people's congressional voting record, considering that she's never been in a position to vote either way on the war.  Husker du, frau?

Biden:   I think he was wearing people out with the repetition of items.  Sure, he has a few good points about how McCain has done business.  But please don't make it sound like that's your entire toolbox.  And huge kudos for getting verklempt when mentioning that his son is shipping out... I totally was not expecting that card from him, that bit of vulnerability was what you'd expect of a woman (Palin didn't flinch) and woke people up.  Well-played.

Bonus points to George Lopez for saying that Palin must be a Latina:  she's got a job and her man doesn't, she talks smack and her man says nothing, and she has a pregnant 17 year old daughter.  :)

Bonus points to the moderator for only taking a minimum of bullshit on sticking to times, diverting questions, and extra rebuttals.

Number of times Palin used the word "maverick" to say McCain was one in 90 minutes: 6.  Number of times Biden used the word "maverick" to say McCain wasn't one in 2 minutes:  7.

I asked my girlfriend a couple of weeks ago why the campaigns were talking about James Garner so much, he's not even running.

She didn't laugh, either.

So, on another point, how come every indicator of prudence and judgement in these candidates lives happened 2 years ago?  What the hell happened 2 years ago that was so tumultuous that all these character-defining moments were taking place?
