Also, Gov, I quite enjoyed "Rigid Digit". Delayed review notwithstanding.
- Ting Tings - Be The 1: Sweet, bouncy pop without too much fizz (that's a good thing; I don't like the fizz; it tickles my nostrils).
- They Might Be Giants - Broke In 2: A swap without TMBG is much like soup without liquid -- you can enjoy it, but it ain't soup.
- Belle & Sebastian - The Power of 3: I bought one of their albums but found it annoying and could live without it and so returned it, yet I like the songs of theirs that people put on swaps. Such is life.
- No Comply (feat Mark Fitzgibbon) - 4th Floor Fiesta: Tasty like a good Cuban sandwich without too much ham. What's with the food references tonight?
- David Bowie - 5 years: This song has been covered by everyone from Fish (former lead singer of Marillion) to Phish. The world is a worse place without Mr Bowie.
- Let's Eat Grandma - Deep 6 Textbook: Is this supposed to remind me of Bjork? Are the drums supposed to echo those from the previous track. Could I write a review without asking questions? Is this track enjoyable? Quite so!
- James - 7: Of all the songs in this compilation, this is one of them. Wouldn't be rigid without good ol' number seven, though. Worth hearing just for the line "God made love to me".
- Alanis Morrissette - 8 Easy Steps: Freaky, fun Alanis song. Must admit I've been without Alanis in my life since Jagged Little Pill.
- Kaia Kater - 9 Pin: After listening to this about 9 times, I still can't tell if it's a male or female, and I've decided that I can live without knowing. I enjoy it either way (hey, umfum, leave your personal life out of this!).
- XTC - 10 Feet Tall: I had an XTC phase in college, buth then I did without them for a while. Recently, I jumped back into their discography and have discovered so many delightful nuggets. I didn't fully appreciate Nonsuch when it came out, for example, as much as I do now -- nor Skylarking, for that matter (the Reverse Polarity edition is great, BTW).
- C.O.B. - 11 Willows: I imagine it's difficult finding songs with 11 in the title. Tesla's "Heaven Nine Eleven" is the only one that springs to mind at the moment without looking more up online.
- Rush - 2112 Overture: You can't drive an hour in Canada without being blasted with a Rush song. Thank goodness, eh! For some reason, this is THE LOUDEST song in this collection.
- Kathryn Williams - 13: This one is really engaging -- even though I've gone about 30 years without being close to that age. Excellent find.
- Beck - 14 Rivers, 14 Floods: Are you like me? Do you think Beck is a musical genius even though you've gone several years without buying an actual Beck release? Sure, he lets out a few stinkers here and there, but all the great ones do that. I really didn't think he'd be around so long after he hit big with "Loser".
- Supergrass - Prophet 15: This is one of my favorite songs from all of your swaps -- great sound and feel all around. This swap title wouldn't be as good without it.
- Decembrists - 16 Military Wives: I don't know how I feel about these guys -- mostly good, I guess, but I still find my collection is without their presence -- album-wise, that is. Will probably be corrected one day.
- Fiery Furnaces - 1917: I say I like weird and different music, but then the Furnaces show up, and I shy away. What are humans without hypocrisy, though? I take back what I said about Rush being loud earlier. Maybe my headphones are screwed up. Each song seems to get slightly louder as I go along.
- Alice - I'm 18: A live version! Most of our swaps have been made without live versions, it seems, but there is a time and a place for all things.
- Paul Hardcastle - 19: Could have gone with Prince and "1999", but I like this choice. This song was so captivating when it came out. I was less than 19 years old without much of a clue what the song was about, but I learned.
- Regina Spektor - 20 Years of Snow: See, now this one is odd, but I enjoy it more than the Furnace song above (which I could honestly do without. Sorry!).
- The Cranberries - 21: Ah, the classics. Where would music today be without the '90s? Radiohead was still a novelty BritPop band. U2 was on top of the world (but not for long), and Oasis was a thing. Anyway, here's Wonderwall...
- Flaming Lips - When yer 22: Wonderful weirdness from the masters of such. Though I have found I can do without them since way back in 2006 when Mystics came out. Their releases since then have been a little too wispy for my taste.
Winner, winner, chicken dinner. Another great collection from TheGov. In fact, if you don't plan to do so, I may pick up where you left off and submit a future swap starting with #23 and going to, well, who knows? My idea is to not be so "rigid" as I did think of several songs further up the number line. Great listening, and thank you as always!
