That's false. I say this having spent 6 years as a trained suicide hotline counselor, and making suicide the subject of my comprehensive Master's exam, and spending several more years as a psychotherapist. Also, I have much direct personal experience with suicidal persons, a high proportion of whom "succeeded" in their attempts. Too much to go into here.
Research and my direct experience both support the contention that ObiJo's is the typical approach to committing suicide. Suicidal persons tend to say things like, "I don't see the point of living," "I'm tired of life," and "I'm going to kill myself." They show other signs, too, like wrapping up personal business and giving away treasured possessions to friends.
There is a type of guy-- usually a guy-- who will say nothing to anyone, and will secretly buy a firearm or steal cyanide from the Botany lab (both methods used by very close acquaintances of mine), drive to a remote location, and do the thing. There's no way to stop them.
People who don't warn you of their suicidal intent are very serious. But that is not to say that people who warn you are not serious. They are. Believe me. Or don't believe me, and do a search in Psych Abstracts.
