And of you ever read Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series? I needed a little something to read on the plane and at the airport and the first of the series was what I ended up grabbing last week before we left for Chicago. I ended up getting a sore throat and not feeling too well when I got back on Friday and ended up spending the entire day lying around reading. I just started the fourth one this morning and I'm having trouble doing anything else aside from reading.

Anyone else ever get swept into something like this?

Every time a new book comes out, I re-read that series. It gets quite confusing in the later books, so the re-read always clarifies something. There are at least a couple hundred characters with their own little lives that weave in.

Robert Jordan did one of those SciFi channel moderated chat things a while back and a few of my questions were used. The log is at http://www.ladyj.net/WOT/

I always assumed other people would be in the same boat as I was. There's something about these books that make me want to take notes. It almost impossible to just pick up one of the ones in the middle after being gone awhile and trying to get right back into things. Part of why I was rereading is that there's at least one, maybe two new books that have come out since I finished it last. I knew I'd never remember what the hell was going on unless I read them all again.

Did I mention that bloke named Gabe Billings,
With gorilla shit lodged in his fillings?
He's not only geeky,
But his anus is leaky,
From too many robotic drillings.

Sorry, I saw that this thread had not been posted to for over twenty-four hours, and I got worried.

Huzzah! I've found a way around the web nazis at work. I can browse sites through safeweb.com. That is, until they put safeweb on the list of restricted sites. Currently they have http://www.safeweb.com blocked, but not https://www.safeweb.com. Yipee.

There are some obscure posts popping up that are making my head hurt. What the hell is everyone talking about? What's with this posting to the Comics Archive and what not? I'm so confus-ed.

May I have a drink? Alcoholic, of course. Black rum makes smashing cocktails.

Can one of you geeks extend this mnemonic device for remembering the digits for pi? Then you will be truely colossal, grasssmoker!

DUDE! Use the mnemonic! It will get you all the way to 3.141592653589. What I would like to see is if someone can continue a dialoge that extends the mnemonic.

How I wish I could enumerate Pi easily, since all these horrible mnemonics prevent recalling any of pi's sequence more simply.

Bloody showboating... All you have to remember is 3.14159 for all everyday applications of Pi, including most computer programming. If you ever need more precision than that, you will be in a situation where trying to recall it with a mnemonic will be unnecessary - a professional lab, or some such.

*rolls eyes*

I may be a geek, but I am still a pragmatist. ;)

You have seen through my plan. If I can get you geeks to fill out the words to create a meaningful mnemonic as long as war and peace with which to remember the digits of pi, geek freak babes will be on me like flow on a rotor turbine!

Tangent equals rise over run
But cosine's not nearly as fun
With talk of adjacent,
I'm not too complacent
So I think I'll go tickle a nun.

What is a pion?

You heard me right, bitch.

I think that's the first haiku I've ever written with increasing sentence length. That's going on my resume.

Shit! Didn't anyone notice how far down the thread list this got? I had to scroll down once to see it! Sheesh!

Geeky topic to discuss:

a) How many of you are looking forward to the Harry Potter movie?

b) How many of you are too embarrassed to tell your friends you are looking forward to the Harry Potter movie?

I've been trying to get everyone I know to read them for a couple of years now, so everyone knows that I will be first in line.

Read the books.

Now.

That's an order!

A 31 year old friend of mine gave them to my wife and me as a combined birthday present (25 and 26 at the time, respectively) and we have since put people ranged between 16 and 45 onto them. Funny, entertaining, amusingly silly, surprisingly complex... just great all round, really.

I've only ever read the first book (The Philosopher's or Sorcerer's Stone, depending on where you live). I wasn't particularly impressed. I thought it was pretty derivative and not that well written. Maybe the series gets better later on, though.
