For anybody that has the dough, I highly recommend the Phalanx speaker system from Alon`. It is the ne plus ultra of home stereo speaker systems. It's from the guy who was the chief engineer at Dahlquist for a billion years and was responsible for the stunning imagery of the free-field DQ-10s.

Try a pair of AtmaSphere 60 watt valve state mono blocks to drive them and don't even skimp on the preamp.

And since I can't afford them, if you DO buy some, call me and I'll bring whiskey and CDs.

This fawn wants to share a single Internet connection between two or more PCs. What do I do?

Gabe, if I read correctly, you just recently set up your home network to share one Internet connection, right? Using a router, I suppose? Or did you set up a proxy server? We are soon going to attempt to do the Internet-sharing thing in our house and were wondering if you had any advice. Is it difficult to configure the router (if that's what you did)? If you used a router, what kind is it, and is it working as advertised?

I've had the same LINKSYS hub for like, 5 years or something. We were using it when we shared a dialup, and we use it now to share cable modem access.

I dunno how to set it all up, however, because I've always had techie boyfriends upon whom I could foist the responsibility.

Right now I'm doing using a hub, which is pretty easy. Just add another NIC to the PC with the internet access, run a cable to the hub and then run more cables out to the other computers. If you need a firewall you have to get a program for the main PC. The connection will only stay up while the primary PC is on.

Routers, I think, are a might more confusing, but not too expensive. Get a wireless one, which isn't too much more, just in case you decide later on down the road you'd like that added benefit. Most have built in firewalls, and it runs independent of the PCs so it's the only thing that needs to stay on all the time.

I have the luxury of a bigger geek than me who I can call for assistance when I get stuck. Yipee.

I'm thinking about upgrading to a router when I get a little more cash. I'd also like to get another PC and start playing around with web server stuff, since I'd like to see how all that works and I'm clueless right now.

I've been using the hub for a while. the problem is that with our cable Internet provider, you need to get an IP address for each PC and you have to pay an extra $6/month per extra IP address. Is that what you are doing or do you have DSL or something else? What I intend to do is just pay for one IP, set the router to that, and then have the PCs on our LAN use that one IP for Internet access. As far as I know, that works. I'm just not sure about how to use routers yet, but I guess I'll learn. Our router arrives Wednesday...

I can't give you the textbook geek definition for that, but I'm almost positive that running through a hub doesn't neccesitate multiple IP addresses. In the case of a router, it's assigning local machine addresses for all your PC, printers and what not, but you only need one IP for the link to the outside world.

I think routers and hubs both let you do this. I think the 'buy extra IP addresses' is some sort of scam the ISPs perpetrate.

But again, I could be talking out my ass.

We need a real geek to tell us what's what.

As luck would have it, my resident geek just called me and I posed this question to him and he told me what's what.

The whole idea of you not being able to run multiple PCs off of one connection is apparently just a method of bilking more money off of you. You can do it either by using a router, or a PC with internet connection sharing and a hub, either of which do the same thing.

Thus your hub was fine, and your router will be fine, too.

Then you can tell your friends, "I have a router for my computer."
And they'll say "What kind of bits does it take? Does it make good dovetails?"
Then you'll say, "No, the other kind of router, idiot."
And they'll say, "Oh, sorry."
And you'll say, "No problem, boorite."
