I've talked about how scary the librarians are where I live.

But anway, it's funny, there's this guy at our blockbuster who seems to be pretty strange. He's this lanky asian guy who looks like he hopped out of a kung fu movie. He has a really tense neck(you can see tendrils of tendons sometimes) and he speaks in without an accent, yet in a jittery, halting manner. Once he squenched his eyes shut and all of a sudden sang a line from some song pretty loud. I don't like to ask him about movies.

It would -I actually don't know that you can for sure turn on an English translation I just imagined they would have it on there somewhere, so if you are illiterate don't rent or buy it soley based on that piece of information.

A while back I rented The City of Lost Children. It had the English translation that I turned on, thinking maybe it would be preferable to the subtitles. It drove me up the fucking wall. Voices that didn't quite go with the characters along with the mouths not synching up were way too distracting. So I flipped on the subtitles and everything was fine.

I also have to watch these videos for a college telecourse that I'm taking. I go into the library where they have tvs you can use. The one I sit at has the captioning on, and I can't turn it off, so when I watch the videos, I find my self inevitably reading all the captions. Whenever I notice that I'm doing it, I force myself to stop, then I go right back to it a minute later. It's odd.

If you can manage to listen and watch at the same time, subtitles are like a free language lesson.

My only other observation here is that the French talk too darned fast. I grew up speaking French from age 8, and half the time I can't understand a thing French actors are saying. Trop vite, you bastards! My French needs work.

What others say about boorite!

I got the Brotherhood of the Wolf dvd when it came out earlier this month, and was excited because they had converted it to english. However, I quickly found myself setting it back to the original french spoken dialogue with the english subtitles....it flowed better and gave me the same fuzzy all over feeling that I got when I saw it in the theater.

Something about a dry, droll, english voiceover in a martial arts fight scene just doesn't go well....

I saw that with the voiceovers too... made me think it would have been easier with the french, yeah.

The same thing happened to me with "Lola rennt", the english voiceover was truly awful.

As did "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon". Watch it with English dub AND English Subtitles...you'll get completely different stories.

Q said in the episode "Deja Q" from ST:TNG that you could reverse the gravitational constant of the universe thereby reversing the mass of a moon near a planet the Enterprise was trying to save. Of course he lost his powers so he couldn't do it, but it gave me the idea that if I could reset the ubergeek constant of the universe, I could get first post on this thread AND most of the major comic numbers(10,000 50,000, 100,000).
