If you are actually interested in where the Scottish language came from, read on. If not... well... don't. There are two distinct English dialects in Scotland - Highland Scots and Lowland Scots. The one we are most familiar with, from Ewen MacGregor and Billy Connolly, is Lowland Scots. It developed from an old Germanic language (known as Old Scots, and now a lost language) that was spoken, funnily enough, in the Lowlands. Highland Scots sounds more like Irish, because is developed from Gaelic. In a few isolated parts of northern Scotland, such as the Outer Hebrides, they still speak Gaelic as their first language.

I wrote an essay on the Lowland Scots dialect of English a few weeks ago... :)
