Just thought I'd start a thread that would allow for appropriate warning. Feel free to use this thread to talk about Matrix Revolutions in any amount of detail you want. If you'd stumbled on this thread, beware, people will probably post spoilers here.

So at the end of the film, Neo forges peace between humanity and the machines. Nice and fluffy, but what about the fact that the machines can only exist because of their dependency upon human beings as duracells? How can there ever be peace between man and machine all the while humanity is enslaved by beings who can only exist because of that enslavement?

And another thing - the whole point of the first film was to free humanity from the machines, yet by the third film, we're all supposed to be duped into thinking that by defeating Smith, everything returns to happy-happy normality; but it's doesn't. Virtually the whole of the human race is still plugged into the Matrix, and it was that fact which Neo (at the end of the first film) was supposed to be confronting. Smith is an anomaly in the computer simulation, he isn't the ultimate foe of the Matrix saga; the Matrix itself is supposed to be that. Remember Morpheus saying "we're trying to save people who don't realise they need to be saved" or somesuch line? What happened to that at the end of Matrix Revolutions?

Bah.

The bit that got the biggest laugh in the cinema where I saw it was when Trinity died. I certainly found it quite funny when she said "I can't come with you," and the camera pulls back to show she's been skewered. That's not right, surely?

I think when it came to writing the ending, they realised they were in a bit of a lose/lose situation. Letting everyone out of the Matrix whether they wanted out or not would be a bit of a downer- "Surprise! Your life isn't real! Instead you live in this apocalyptic wasteland!". So instead they've pulled this "The Matrix isn't so bad, as long as the folk are aware of it and choose to stay in it," about-face and tried to distract the audience from that with red-hot Smith action. It just struck me as being a total cop-out.

Okay, let's get to it.

It's been said that the machines survive on both humans and a form of fission, I believe. Therefore, they don't need humans to stay around, just to survive en masse, as they have been.

In a way, the humans succeeded. Remember at the end of the movie? "What about the ones who want to leave?" They are to be freed.

This was a happy-sappy ending to please all the left-wingers in the audience, I think. Rather than victory over a cold, heartless machine, we see a peaceful end to the war, and find out that every little machine in the Matrix is actually just as human as us (awwww).

But really, no matter how it ended, it would have been melancholy.

Well, they probably didn't think about sequels when they were writing the original anyway.

No, but it might've helped if they'd thought about the original when they were writing the sequels...

Hey, c'mon. They had Morpheus, Neo, Trinity, Smith and the Oracle in the sequels. Shouldn't that count?

Smith became the bad guy when he turned against the machines, as well. When Neo busted him up in the first movie, Smith became a free agent. He was no longer controlled by the machines. The greed and the power took over, and he wanted to take over everything. Smith took over the Matrix, so the machines knew that he could take over them, as well. Thus the catalyst to have Neo make a deal with the machines: At the risk of my own life, spare my people and I will defeat your enemy because you know I'm the only one who can do it.

I agree that this is a very contrived way of bringing humans and machines together, but the Wachowski's backed themselves into a corner with the whole parallel-to-Christ thing...how else could Neo sacrifice himself and become the savior of humanity?

I would also agree that pre-Neo Matrix would be interesting to see, as well. I guess that's what the Animatrix was for, but it would be more interesting to see a live-action version of exactly how the machines came into power.

Oh wait, that was T3: Rise of the Machines, wasn't it?

I think it would have be cool if: Neo dies, Smith takes over, The humans are forever enslaved, the machines dominate until the end of time.

I truely believe the Hero saving the day angle is bullshit. Im tired of it. I would have been mad if Neo lived. I think it would be great if for once, just once, someone would have the balls to make everyone in the film suffer! Suffer!

As opposed to making everyone in the audience suffer?

AH HA HA HA HA!! Just joking.

Although I said I was entertained, or that I enjoyed Revolutions or whatever I said, I agree that the ending was, for the most part, crap. I mean what's supposed to happen now? I shouldn't be left thinking this stuff, I wanted answers and an ending.

Kramer, I also laughed (along with some others in the cinema) when the camera panned down to a skewered Trinity, perhaps we were in the same showing, or all Scots find it amusing. I knew something was wrong, I was hoping her lower half had been cut off and was lying by her head, but I was happy enough with what I got.

When Neo and Trinity are flying towards the Hub or whatever it was, and the sentinals charge at them and Neo just puts up his hand and blows them all to shit, I couldn't help thinking about the fight that had just taken place at the dock and how Sgt Shouty-Pants would be screaming: "Oh, thanks a fucking lot Neo, we could have used that little trick like half an hour ago, ass!".

Smith dies in the first one, bringing him back in the sequels was the ultimate cop out. Yeah he stole the film in the first one with a great performance, and Im not knocking the performances he gave in the sequels, but surely if they were trying to break the envelope and do something inovative they would have left him dead and moved on.

Agreed. I mean, I put something in my recycle bin, but it's still there the next day if I don't clean it out.

Besides, Neo died and came back to life. :P

My ending would have been this:

Neo frees everyone, they blow up the robots real nice, then they are left with the task of rebuilding society... BUT, we find out that this whole defeat of the machines things is just another facet of the Matrix. Faced with losing lots of minds that just cannot accept the program, the machines devised a Matrix version 2 as a dumping ground for all those malcontents like Neo and Morpheous and Mouse. There is no escape from the Matrix, we are eternally imprisoned with no chance of escape.

Then, maybe as a final kick, the camera pans back, out past the planets, until you see they are merely subatomic partices at the center of a huge mainframe... a mainframe that is only a virtual construct inside another computer, which in turn is only a portion of another greater program, etc., etc. until we finally see that all this Matrix poop was just a chunky twelve your old playing King Of Fighters on a Neo-Geo.

Or something like that.

Yes.
What? Was it bad or something?
Yeah. I let myself get all build up in expectation, then they pulled the oldest trick in the book...
Haha, you fuckers! You paid ten dollars to find out Neo was just me all over again! Fuck original ideas. I rule!
