So the other day, a friend of mine is introducing me to a friend of his and he said, "M does *blah-blah-blah* and *blah-blah-blah* and he does online comic strips." This sounded really weird to me because I've never thought of myself as an online cartoonist.

For the first part, I don't draw the things. It's like giving captions to clip art and I just can't take myself seriously.

Secondly, it's a site where everyone is doing the same thing I'm doing, so it's not really like I'm doing something really amazing.

Lastly, I don't get paid to do it.

But then I thought about it a little more and said "Why not? Why not call myself a cartoonist?"

So I'd like to know your opinion. Do you consider yourself an online cartoonist/comic creator? Does it really even matter what we call ourselves? Is this something serious that we are all doing or is this just some kind of weird hobby?

Hmm. No, I guess I don't consider myself a cartoonist. I really can't draw very well at all. I am a writer by trade, though, and that's what I'm doing here. I doubt that I'd ever get a career writing comics, or for Mad Magazine, so I guess this thing we do is more of a hobby than a jobby.

I'd call us StripCreators. We create comic strips. We're more writers than anything else, because it takes more talent to completely create the visuals than it does to simply arrange a bunch of pre-created ones.

Allen Henderson, boinky33, and a few others I would say are online cartoonists. If I wasn't so fucking lazy I would be one, too.

Most strips on here are literally better than the vast majority of newspaper comics. Except maybe Luann.

What about the ingenuis Family Circus? And don't even get me started on how utterly brilliant and socially conscious, Garfield has become lately! *sigh*

Only strips I read nowadays are Boondocks, Doonesbury, Get Fuzzy and Monty... and even they aren't nearly as good as they used to be.

Cats with Hands. Somebody actually gets paid to draw Cats with Hands. They probably even make a living at it. I figure I should get a few bucks an hour just for breathing.

I can draw pretty well but I'm an absolutely horrible writer so doing anything other than Stripcreator would be pretty much out. I don't consider myself a cartoonist since I don't draw anything; I more just go by the site's title: I'm a strip creator.

I think I'm more of a shitcreator.

I did draw/write cartoons when I was younger and then again in college, but my artistic ability is very limited.

Still, with the help of a scanner and a couple of software programs, I'm trying to create my own "forumuser" character. If I can get it to look right and Brad approves, then I'll consider creating characters for some other folks.

That's not bad at all for using a mouse.

I've been playing around with scanning in pencil drawings and then adjusting the contrast to white out the many, many erasure marks and make all my lines black. I also do stuff like smooth and resharpen lines so that that the uneven edges go away. I've only just started playing around though -- nothing worthwhile to show for it yet.

I draw a comic for the school paper called Mokeyohio. It's about a philosopher, a turtle, a german guy, a waffle, and a giant lobster. They do stuff. I don't get paid for it, but at least I'm published in some way or another. If my friends weren't such lazy bastards at web design, I'd have a big website devoted to it by now. But they are, and I don't.

You can pick up official Mokeyohio swag at this page:

http://www.cafeshops.com/mokeyohio

There's also some of boinky's Shapefactory stuff there, but you don't care about that.

I call myself a contributor to a hummus site.

Besides that, I never take this stuff seriously. I consistently steal good jokes and then, as MikeyG says, I "arrange" the characters and backgrounds as best I can to fit the joke.

I have absolutely no drawing ability whatsoever, so maybe the correct term for me would be coordinator.

I used to draw a strip that got offers from some local N.E. Ohio rags.

Do I consider myself a cartoonist *here*?

No.

I write humour and stuff it into the available constructs offered by this website.

That's easy.

A humourist?

I am.

A comedy writer?

I've made a few on that tip.

A cartoonist?

Here?

Nah.

Consider this: In many published cartoons, there are two people listed as the author. One draws the pictures, the other "captions" it or whatever you want to call what you're doing here. Just because you didn't doodle your actors, doesn't make you less of a director.

Also, I never thought of making comics here as being all that hard either until trying to introduce a few friends to stripcreator. They were seriously struggling for hours to create comics ending in the flame prop. So, to most of the people who replied to this thread modestly, you have to have SOME kind of talent.
