If your girlfriend's spent her whole life in Australia, how did you manage to meet her in Slovakia? Unless there's a Slovakia in Australia. I guess that must be it.

I met my girlfriend while teaching English in Bratislava, Slovakia 2 years ago. She was there to visit relatives, and we met through mutual acquaintances at a party.
You'd be surprised at how many Slovaks and Czechs live in Sydney though; about 10,000.

In China, I have taught in Hefei and Taiyuan. In Hefei I lived outside the city and it sucked, unfortunately.

I can help anyone to wread and rite in English, it's my job, duh.

Seriously though, this job kicks ass and I wouldn't trade it for the world.

I was thinking about doing a TEFL course myself, as it happens. Would that make it much more likely for me to get a job abroad, or should I just skip it?

if you're seriously considering getting TEFL certified, DO it. You won't get a job without it (unless you apply to some poor, public school in China, then they'll take you with open arms and give you 2$ a month).

In any case, yes, it'll greatly improve your chances of getting employed somewhere. Unfortunately, due to the recent surge of countries that have joined the EU it's getting close to impossible for non-EU people to work there. The trick is to have dual-citizenship and last time I checked that was difficult.
North American ESL teachers are highly regarded though and anywhere else in the world, it's easy to get a great job. Especially if you have a degree, in any subject, then you can land a job in 'degree-only' countries such as Japan, Korea and Saudi Arabia, where they pay you like 45,000$ a year + housing and round-trip tickets home.
