I bet gmail is never going to publically accept applications. There's practically no point in it now. This way, it's harder to set up like, 50 gmail accounts! :D
Saves Google money and time. It's a great viral marketing thing, you sent it to 50 people, they sent it to 50 more and so on. This probably works even better than hotmail's ads. Google has always been pretty brilliant with this kind of thing. Look at google ads. Targeted marketing based on the content on each page? Brilliance. Rather than just giving Brad 20 rotating banners based on comics, it runs through thousands that relate to weighted key words on the page. While that makes for the occasional funny mistake, it also makes for ads that actually get clicked on.
I'd love to have gotten a piece of that action when they first started.

Everybody with a gmail account suddenly got 50 invites. Google was very specifically using this method to get word of mouth out there, and it worked like a charm.

I've also got 50 invites if anyone wants a gmail account.

It's not just the free e-mail places, Mikey, your ISP's e-mail is just as susceptible to being archived or scanned or whatever. No one reads those disclaimers though... since it's part of the overall package.

Yeah, but I have internet access at work, and not at home, so everything I do can be monitored by someone anyway.
