I noticed that in the read my dam comics portion of the site (for newbies just learning maybe) that a lot of the critique is crap. Redo your comic or It sucks doesn't really help.

Please be a little more kind and give input to someone who is asking. For you are their hero's. Unless you make crappy comics, then you are there Hero's.

For the record, I try to give useful comments to everyone for whom there is hope. For the rest... there's nothing I can do, anyway. So I might as well take any amusement out of them I can wring.

And what's with the posessive heroes? Are you getting it wrong on purpose and I'm just missing hte joke?

An inside joke on my part I guess, I just think being a positive influence is good.

I do agree that not_scyess is the source of positive feedback in those forums. There needs to be more role models like that.

Just remember: the newbs of today are the vets of tommorow.

I think it's about time someone put together a "How to make comics" FAQ for the site.

Things like how to present a strip, set up and deliver a punchline correctly, use the characters so that they are appealing visually (eg: don't use the cowboy with a forumuser because only one of them has legs), encourage people to check their spelling and grammar before completing the comic and avoid 1337 and crap like that (or when it is appropriate to the humour to use it), the best way to use the forums here to promote your comics and get people to like your work instead of just annoying people (this one will have to be voted on I'd say), things like that.

I think the best way to do it would be to find someone who is willing to write the guide and is well respected here, have them start a topic somewhere and get all the regulars with high ratings to post their thoughts.

Otherwise if nobody well respected can be bothered I'll draft it myself when I get the net on at home (since I just found out that I'm not getting fired, and the only thing that might get me fired is spending too much time on the net because I can only use it at work...)

I think there are too many ways to make a funny comic to make a FAQ about how to set up a punchline, etc.

However, advice on using good grammar and good character placement might be helpful.

I agree that a lot of us could do a better job of giving positive feedback, or any feedback at all, myself included.

A "Tips for Making Comics FAQ" could be just what this site needs.

When I was a little neophyte, not_scyess was great about giving me helpful tips and tidbits, and a few other fine folks said things like "You may be on to something. Keep going."

Periodically I'll go in there (RMDC) and try to give words of wisdom, but generally all I can say is "That's not how I would do that comic" or "You don't have to explain everything in narration boxes." I'm as much a student of this thing as anyone else is.

Maybe a FAQ type thing with common tips would be a good addition to the RMDC forum. Something that explains common problems and how to avoid them?

Here's a quick how-to:

GUIDE: How To Make A Comic At Stripcreator.com by umfumdisi
4-07-05
#1 Avoid using this space unless absolutely necessary.
#2 Think about the witticism you are about to create. There's a lot of space between here and the last panel.
#3 Pace and timing are crucial elements of humor, so figure out the best setup for your punchline or denouement.
#4 Avoid using this space unless absolutely necessary.
#5 Don't arbitrarily change characters.
#6 Use backgrounds that help illustrate the "action," theme, and/or mood of your comic.
#7 Do not use the above "random comic layout" button without adult supervision.
#8 Using proper grammar, spelling, and punctuation makes the reader more comfortable and aids in comprehension.
#9 Never pay anything more than five dollah for sucky sucky.

Anyone have anything else to add?
