It's funny you should mention funds. Nathan and I are FLAT BROKE. We've spent every last dime on wedding stuff and it's going to be difficult to make our mortgage payment on time this month. So a guy from his work was walking around asking for donations for the victims yesterday, and Nathan politely said "I'm sorry, I can't spare the money right now". The guy walked around the whole shop telling everyone what a "cheapskate" Nathan is that he can't afford to give a couple bucks to the relief. Nathan and I both have plans to give blood this weekend, though I think there's only one hospital open down there right now (Oschner or Tulane?), but we can't afford to spend money right now on anything, much less throw some that may or may not be going to a relief effort -- after all, the guy was collecting it in a mayonaise jar. I'm borrowing money just to make my ends meet and some guy thinks it's his business to tell me I'm heartless, GREAT!

Kajun, there are people on the ground shooting at the aid workers and helecopters that are already there. How would you get aid and supplies into that environment? As much as I'd love to see Bush wander into the anarchy in person, I really don't know what he could do differently besides reach into his own fat bankroll... which isn't a particularly bad idea, really, but while you've got the Louisianans firing at the aid workers, all the money in the world isn't going to help unless there's a budget to pay for armed escorts.

Guidelines for Health Kit
A Health Kit contains specific items:

1 hand towel (15" x 25" up to 17" x 27")
1 wash cloth
1 comb (large and sturdy, not pocket-sized)
1 nail file or fingernail clippers (no emery boards or toenail clippers)
1 bath-size bar of soap (3 oz and up)
1 toothbrush (single brush only in original wrapper; no child-sized brushes)
1 large tube of toothpaste (4.5 or larger, expiration date must be 6 months or longer in advance of the date of shipment to Sager Brown)
6 adhesive plastic strip sterile bandages

All items should be placed inside a sealed one-gallon plastic bag. No money, notes, religious or political literature, or other items should be placed in the kits.

Well we've definitely heard that a disgraceful number of people remain stranded, that they feel that they're taunted with the promise of rescue that never materializes, and that the places where people have taken refuge are becoming ruled by violence and it's definitely because the rescue efforts aren't happening quickly enough, and are undermanned and undersupplied. Sadly, at this point, the situation has devolved to the point that every moment that passes makes the people there more agitated and that much more difficult to get to safety. If it continues at this pace, I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of the new casualties of the storm aren't people dying of hunger or thirst, but people who have been shot by their own National Guard.

It most certainly is disgraceful though. An utter shame that will not be lived down for a long time.

I don't know much about New Orleans. I think they've had some yucky weather lately though.
