Okay, so I'm a bad person. I want to download some video and music files. Anyway, I haven't done it for years, basically since AudioGalaxy and KazaaLite both went splat.

What's the best thing to use these days? I don't want whole movies or anything, as I don't mind renting or buying or going to a cinema (and pixellated PC screens are the worst place to eatch movies) but I'll occasionally want to grab a Don Hertzfeld short or something. Oh, and songs. I like to sample a few songs from an album before buying.

So, which client and network does everyone recommend? What's the best way to avoid being whacked with the litigation stick?

With iTunes you're supposed to be able to listen to music another user has without actually paying for it, though you can't download said music to your computer. I'll have to ask my girlie for more details, but that's what she does before buying an album.

AudioGalaxy was my favourite (after Ad-aware removed Gator, of course). I got it when I first got cable, and downloaded around four gigabytes of music in a week. Of course, I had many back then, so many bands sold me their CDs as a result.

While I have no ethical problem downloading files when I know I am not going to rip off the artists involved, I'm certain;y not going to pay someone else for them. That, to me, is genuine piracy. Sure it's only a dollar or two a month, but it's a matter of principles.

for the cost of a mcdonalds lunch, you can get an entire month of music for free.

naturally, you can't keep it, so you have to use applian to convert it to mp3, which is probably illegal.

but still, good selection and no one names the mp3 'James Taylor' because it is really Harry Chapin! and so you don't think 'oh cool, a version of cats in the cradle by James Taylor' and download it, only to find out you totally got it wrong.

plus on a cable modem it is literally split seconds to get your music and its all there.
