Gunman Killed During Standoff With Lakewood Police
5 Nearby Schools Locked Down During Standoff

LAKEWOOD, Ohio -- An 18-year-old gunman who fired shots at officers from inside a Lakewood home was killed during the standoff with police.

The incident took place Wednesday afternoon on Granger Avenue, near Clifton Road, and prompted five nearby schools to go under lockdown.

NewsChannel5 reported that the gunman, now identified as Bradley Babbit, opened fire at police after they arrived at the home around 1:30 p.m. Lakewood police called in a SWAT team and other police departments to assist in the standoff.

Police said Babbit fired shots at police off and on for about two hours. The SWAT team brought an armored vehicle into the driveway, and officers said it was at this point that Babbit came out the back door and shot at officers again.

Police fired back at Babbit, who was found dead inside the house about 45 minutes later. It is unclear if Babbit was killed by one of the officers, or if his fatal gunshot wound was self-inflicted.

The coroner is expected to make a determination about Babbit's death.

No officers were injured during the standoff. Police said they have had a long history of problems with the suspect.

Three nearby public schools and two private schools went under lockdown during the standoff. Police also were telling residents in the neighborhood to go into their basements if they felt unsafe during the standoff situation.

The superintendent of Lakewood City Schools said parents of the students had to pick their children up, and the children were not permitted to walk home by themselves.

After the standoff ended, students were able to leave the school on their own.

I live in Newton, MA which just two years ago was rated the safest city in America. A few months ago some white-collar worker was shot execution-style as he walked out of a parking garage. This was at 8 in the morning, no more than a block from my house so my mom heard the shot and thought it was a car backfiring. It's the first murder in that town since... well, ever possibly. I'm not sure about that, but definitely the first in decades.

But that's nothing compared to the daily shit-show that was New York in the 80's. My parents used to live in NYC in the 80's where shit went down all the time. My next door neighbor killed his wife and then jumped out a window into the court-yard below us. A car-bomb went off a few blocks away. A drug dealer was shot one morning a block away. My mom had a co-worker who was killed for his infidelity (his fiancee's brother killed him). A store-owner got shotgunned in the face (but was able to walk away like the lawyer that Cheney blasted) after trying to chase down a shop-lifter. I only remember the next-door neighbor thing since I was a little kid, but yeah, apparently the city was pretty bad back then.

We've had 1 murder since 2004. Last month a guy from Laramie robbed a bank in Cheyenne and took police on a high speed chase from Cheyenne to Laramie. On the interstate. For 45 miles. Where traffic is about 5 vehicles per mile. Counting both lanes.

He then proceeded to drive to his house where his SUV was rammed and he was shot. But lived.

Damn, that was an awesome day.

We do have higher than national average car thefts, so everyone better lock their Hondas.

one night, coming home from work, i saw two dudes chasing each other, one with a gun in his hand, firing in the air.

didn't hear about a body or a shooting, so i figured things were alright..

i've got to move out of this place.

I live in bumfuck nowhere, but a couple nights ago I heard a single shot. I have no idea what happened. We recently had a new family of mexicans move in, but I'm pretty sure it has little to do with race and mroe to do with these specific mexicans being idiots, as we've had several mexican neighbors before and they're all good people. The house they live in was cleaned up and fixed up before they moved in, and it's gone downhill since they moved in. It's become a tiny barrio.

The mexicans who live next door to them, on the other hand, have immaculate surroundings and it's just one family. The same thing could have happened if white trash had moved in. And did. We had some white trash neighbors a few years back. They pretty much destroyed everything nice about the house next to us and within less than a year had turned it into a vehicle graveyard.

But the mexicans a couple doors down, the new neightbors, they look like the gangster type. Used to be we could leave our cars unlocked and not worry about a thing. Nowadays I'm really considering moving up my purchase of a gun.

i just saw on the news last night that bout a mile from my place some transit cops shot a guy in the back then 3 more times in the front after the first shot spun him around.
they did this in broad daylight in front of more that 30 witnesses as the guy tried to run away.
there was apparently no weapon on him but police claim he was carrying a gun and smelled of liquor.

now normally i'm pretty pro-cop. i have a few friends that are cops and they say they love their job. i feel like you couldn't pay me enough to do their job, way too much bullshit and basic human nastiness for me.
but even i think they got out of hand this time. if it turns out this guy wasn't packin a gun, there should be something a bit more severe than an unpaid suspension.

My wife and I visited NYC in the late 90s and stayed in Manhattan. I went out one morning to get us some sodas because the machine in the hotel was out of order.

As I was walking to a drug store just down the block, I saw a man in a suit lying face down on the sidewalk with arms and legs akimbo. Blood had already pooled underneath his head. I noticed a dented green metal awning on the ground not far from his body. Also, both his shoes had come off (or he had possibly removed them before jumping/falling).

It was a weekday morning, so the street was very busy. Yet everyone kept walking around the dead guy like nothing had happened.

The drug store was one door up, so I hurried in and purchased my goods. As I was checking out, a cop came in and told the manager/owner that he'd have to shut down for the day until the scene was cleared. The manager/owner was pretty pissed off. "You mean I have to lose a day's business because of some dead guy?"
