I bet with a little bit of technical know-how you could bang out a script that could check for comic 499999 every few seconds and just publish yours at the right time.
I cheated, but only sorta. I figure it's totally legit if you just happen to make a comic and it's a magic number. It's pretty bogus if you publish 50 blank Asian girl comics just to run the numbers up quick so you can get the number you want.
I was sort of threading the needle between the two. I noticed maybe a week ago that we were getting in 500K territory, and every day I'd take a peek and see that we were only inching toward it.
Last night I was chatting with Brad around 10:30 or so when I looked at the front page and noticed choad had just posted 499998. So I realized it was time to get to work.
While I did have to pad 10 comics, I made an effort to not make them all total shit. I kinda like these:
[Click to view comic: 'The First Rule']
[Click to view comic: 'Physics Cowboys']
[Click to view comic: 'Riddle Me This']
