Well, K-Mart has filed for Chapter 11. I'm not working there anymore, and I'm beginning to worry about my friends who do. They're planning on closing many stores, one of which being the one that I used to work at. Just thought you'd like to know.

That's my stock standard gag regarding 24 hour K-marts. When I found out that a K-mart near us was 24 hour, I was genuinely puzzled. 24 chemists I can understand. 24 hour supermarkets, sure. 24 hour department store? Doesn't quite sit with me. Ever since, I have occasionally remarked that 24 hour K-marts exist in case there is an emergency that requires you to have plastric garden furniture at 3am...

Sometimes you NEED to be able to buy a plant or a parcheesi board in the middle of the night, especially when you live in Lincoln Fucking Nebraska and the stores close before you get out of work.

Where I live, most all the K-Marts already closed several years ago. Luckly, we have a most blessed place called Meijer that is just like a Super K. It sells (almost) everything you could imagine and is open 24 hours a day, 364 days a year. So when I need some motor oil and cherry pie filling at 3 in the morning, I'm never at a loss.

Out here in the Northeast, the two major regional low-price chains (Caldor and Bradless) closed their doors a few years ago. Caldor had it's own issues, but Bradlees definitely suffered after Wal-Mart came into the area.

The only other comparable chains are Ames and K-Mart. Though I understand Target has us in their sights.
