Do you guys think comics need to be mature to be funny or still gross or whatever. I like to make grosser comics, but its interesting to read ones that aren't as funny or gross, because it makes you wonder about stuff, like why that person has an Edipal complex or whatever.

I like to hold myself to a refined, civilized standard. I feel base humor is best left to base intellects.

i guess that is true about base humor (if you mean gross humor like my comics) but even winston churchill would laugh if some famous diplomat just farted himself silly during a meeting or something. you can't say that's not funny. You know, Oedipal, comes from Oedipus? Kills his father and marries his mother? Those Greeks got some weird stuff, I tell ya.

I can't speak for everyone on this site. But most of my comics tend to lean toward the more realistic and civilized manner. I go out of my way to make sure my comics aren't filled with anything that someone might find offensive. I look to satisfy anyone who might be reading from the smallest toddler to the oldest sexiest grandmother. I make my strips for everyone to enjoy without having to worry about being shocked.

Humor isn't funny unless its offensive to somebody. I tend to like any sort of humor that makes me really laugh. Not just think, "Oh, that guy is funny." If it makes you laugh, then put it in a comic.

But seriously, that seems a bit inaccurate, to say that humor HAS to offend to be funny. It's just that offensiveness tends to rake in more laughs. I'll be the first to admit that I like insults; I like Weird Al songs like "Would the Real Slim Shady Please Shut Up" more than non-mean ones like "Amish Paradise."

And Devin, I will be giving money soon, so I will then be in the ranks of you all. In any case, technically all humor is offensive. Something has to go against a convention to be funny. And somewhere someone might be offended by going against that convention.

The humor comes in because it is actually an insult. The joke "receiver" is insulted because the reply is obvious, and yet they couldn't get the answer. It never really crosses your mind, but think about jokes in this way. What is it about them that tickles your funny bone? I'd like to hear a joke that isn't offensive to somebody. Yet I do understand the implication that anything ever said could conceivably be offensive. But jokes more so than others. If it makes you laugh, then its valuable. I will admit that shlimples comics actually made me giggle. So I will retract my statement.

To get back on topic ain't no need to swear to be funny. I would say if the diplomat farted, Churchill would need to say something like:

"My dear General DeGaulle, did you step on a duck?"

"Mais oui, zat one was a meal in itself, non?"

well I almost laughed. No swears. I'm sure someone else (less drunk) could do better
