Geez, boinky, make up your mind.

You're right that Family Guy isn't the greatest thing out there. Sometimes it seems like they writers have watched old Simpsons (or Lucy, or Andy Griffith even) episodes for plot lines, but it's what they do with the material that makes the show enjoyable. Plus, the cut-aways, asides, and flashbacks often appeal more to viewers 25-35 years old than anyone else.

A few things reffed off the top of my head: Good Times, The A-Team, Sanford & Son, Kool-Aid Man (plus a number of 70s-80s commercials/characters), KISS, and Peter turning into "the cleavage of Charlotte Rae"-- Mrs. Garrett from Facts of Life--in the "Viewer Mail" episode. Also, they're not afraid to pay homage to older source material like The Sound of Music and My Fair Lady, Alfred Hitchcock, or the Road Movies of Crosby and Hope (in "Road to Rhoad Island").

And it's often the little things that crack me up--like when a rival fisherman puts up a sign in Peter's fishmarket booth that reads "I HAD SEX WITH ALL THESE FISH." And the Griffin's hometown is Quahog. A quahog is a type of bearded clam. Need I say more? It was these things and others that made me tape the original episodes and show them to friends after the show had been cancelled (winning new fans in the process). Sure, the new shows probably won't live up to all the hype, but I know I'll be watching.

Also, I would like to state that I liked Futurama from the beginning. I sent one of my best friends a Word doc highlighting gags and quotes from the first episode (I wonder if I still have that?).

I would like to go on record as well stating that Futurama spanks the ass of any cartoon sitcom out there. I'll admit that perhaps Family Guy is better on a show for show basis, but Fututrama has some episodes that are more brilliant than a gaggle of Einsteins (The Day The Earth Stood Stupid immediately comes to mind.)

True true true.

Star Trek was canceled and came back in movie form. That has nothing to do with Family Guy, but they do reference Star Trek on there sometimes.

My favorite nuance of Family Guy is the way people fall. It looks like they cut frames out of it so it looks super fast and extra painful. I do feel like it's written for a Gen X audience.

I have. I do like the show, but I am pointing out the negative since everyone else is shitting themselves over it's return.

I have seen and heard of all this. I do get those jokes. I know quite alot about old pop culture for a teenager. My moron friends don't get any of those kind of jokes.
Also, I too like futurama, but the cartoon I'm most sad about being cancelled is home Movies.

Home Movies was phenomenal. I don't gush over many things, but Home Movies was one of the few cartoons that my wife, who seems to have a weird thing against cartoons, really sat down and enjoyed and asked when it was coming on. I loved that show. I had friends who were always saying that it sucked but I begged all of them to give it a chance and everyone said it changed their mind. Damn I miss that show.

All my friends are idiots who smoke weed too much and don't find Home Movies funny because there's no explosions or lebians in it.

Okay, so mmyers and wife, and boinky and myself will form the coalition to bring back Home Movies. And I've only seen the episodes Wizard's Baker through Focus Grill.

Here's a petition to bring back Home Movies if you want to sign it.

Sincerely,

Yeah, just like Corn and Maize.

If you read the interview I posted above, you'll see that Dr. Katz and Home Movies were both drawn by the same animation studio. I can't speak about any other similarities as I could never get into Dr. Katz.

I could never sit through Home Movies because of the dialogue. It was like they all got distracted in mid-sentence or were actively trying to pretend the conversation was killed. I found myself screaming at them to just spit it out so we could get on with our lives. I dunno if they were trying to go for some sort of realistic human conversation with it, but I have yet to have a conversation like that with anyone other than people with a combination of alzheimer's and short term memory loss.

My favorite scene of Family Guy: Lois is explaining that a lot of terrible things happened because someone had a poor self-image. Then they cut to a gym where a puny Hitler is trying to lift weights and he hears giggling, looks over and sees a buff rabbi surrounded by bikini clad women.

I am not familiar with this "Invader Zim," but as for ATHF, I'm not sure what the fuss is about. It's as though the creators thought "You know what annoys me about TV shows? Plot. I wish there were a show that was nothing but non sequitur jokes." That said, a lot of it is cute, but I feel like I'm watching the work of potheads with major ADHD. The point eludes me. Carl rules, though.

I know they're done by the same animators (I actually though it was basically just all the same people), but I still didn't like it that much. I didn't care much for Katz either, but I recognized Jonothan Katz and always enjoyed his standup. Sadly it didn't translate into the TV show. I remember thinking "This is like a really bad 'The Critic'". Then Home Movies came out and I thought "Wow, this is Dr. Katz without jokes". The "comedic" timing is the same, the actors all have that same slow, interrupted speech style, it just feels like the same show with different characters and more poorly drawn. Both shows have made me laugh a couple times, but it's rare that I fall off my couch laughing as much as I do when watching something like Family Guy. I still remember the scene where Quagmire goes "So, how old are you?" "Sixteen." "Eighteen? You're first!" "MOOOOM!" "I like where this is going! OH!"

I've been trying to watch Drawn Together lately, but that show is possibly beyond simple "very bad taste" and up there in "fucking wrong". There are some hillarious jokes in that show, as well as some very sickening things. Yet I can't get enough of it. I'd say it's worse than South Park. And South Park is pretty bad.
