Growing out of newbiedom requires the following three things:
1) You stop referring to yourself as a newbie, but you don't get all defensive if others do.
2) You accept this group as it is. We are a lot of people; you are one. Pathetic newbie whinings just ensure that the newbie stays a newbie, and an unliked one, at that.
3) You don't actively try to jump out of newbie level on your own. Becoming a non-newbie cannot be forced. People who are cool enough to not be newbies for long will be accepted much more rapidly just as a rule. Trying to force that situation is lame, because it means you're walking around saying, "Am I cool yet? How about now? Still not cool? OK, how about now?"
This is just as I see it.
Hmmm. You've read a bit more into my question than I thought, but thanks for your insights.
I was asking the question under the assumption that the title "Stripcreator Newbie" that appears under my name in the forum was an automatic function that changed programatically (much the way an eBay star rating changes after a certain amount of positive feedback is received).
From your answer, it would appear that this is not the case, and that a title is conferred upon a newbie if and when someone decides they deserve it.
In which case... whatever. Mainly, having been on the net in it's various incarnations since 1984, seeing the term "newbie" under my name is a bit disconcerting. But since it is out of my control in terms of how many strips I do, etc... well, what will be will be.
To your point -- I don't see any point (or need) to change the group -- I'm not sure what it would accomplish if one tried. Either I fit in here and I like the people or I don't. If I don't, I find something else to do with my time.
In the end I don't care if anyone thinks I'm cool (I don't have much control over that -- no mater what you do, SOMEONE will think you're a dick), as long as they think my strips are funny.
