If you could build a house anywhere at all, where would it be?
-For most of my life, it's been my dream to own a converted carriage house in greenwich village, NYC... but I've come to the realization that I'm nomadic. I don't think tying myself to one place like that would be wise.
Do you have a favourite item or set of clothing? If so, what?
- My favorite articles of clothing are those rare finds that are comfy, well-made, flattering, and utterly cheap. I have a button-down sweater that I bought 8 years ago on sale for $15, marked down from $70 at a big department store. I wear it all the time. My most recent treasure is this green dress (but not a real green dress, that's cruel) with a twenties-ish style tailored jacket. I usually wear it without the jacket and it's so comfortable and pretty flattering on me, but with the jacket added, I look dressy and really femme - and I got the set on sale for like $23, marked down from $90.
Which physical feature are you most attracted to in the opposite sex?
- Eyes that aren't afraid to meet mine. Height. The ability to breathe through his ears.
What was the last CD you bought?
- I usually download my music for free. I'm what the RIAA hates and fears. However, when I adore a band as much as I do Moxy Früvous, I buy the albums to support the group, get the hard-to-find tracks, and so I can actually own the liner notes and factory printed disc. I recently bought "You Will Go To the Moon", "Bargainville", and "Live Noise" by Moxy Früvous.
By the way, I love Moxy so much, that I remember alt+0252 though I can't recall any of the other codes for extended characters.
Where is your favourite place to be?
- In bed, in that state of half-consciousness, face pressed into my lover's neck, breathing in the mixture of his(or her) smell, my smell, sweat, and sex.
Where is your least favourite place to be?
- Any place where I have to pretend to be other than what I am, or have to refrain from expressing my opinion. For instance - work, where it's not politically wise to express an opinion, because people have long memories and will use whatever you say against you when it furthers their own cause, even if it nearly gets you fired. No, I'm not bitter.
Which part of your body do you most enjoy being massaged?
- Back and shoulders, primarily. I do enjoy a good frontal massage, too (heh heh heh).
What time to you typically wake up in the morning?
- For work, I generally hit snooze until about 7:30 and then scramble around to get out of the house at 7:50. I'm fairly low-maintenance. For a job that pays twice what I make now, I'd get up earlier and put on makeup. For this job, they get dark circles under eyes, touseled hair, clothes that have been hung in the bathroom so the steam from the shower will unwrinkle them, and pre-caffeinated me.
On weekends, I sleep until I wake up. Usually, this ends up being around 10:30ish.
What is your favourite TV show?
- MST3K, Whose Line is it Anyway, Law and Order, Harvey Birdman Attorney at Law, Iron Chef, Good Eats, the Kids in the Hall, uh, I'm sure there are others, but I haven't been able to afford cable tv for a while, so I catch what I can when I go to friends' houses and cherish the memories I have of shows past.
What makes you laugh?
- Cleverness. Kaufman makes me laugh a lot. Gabe makes me laugh a lot. It's narcissistic, but I make me laugh a lot, too.
What makes you angry?
- In myself or in anyone else: ignorance, ineptitude, and anything that impedes my ability to do what I would like to do.
If you could be a master of any musical instrument, which would it be?
- Bass guitar. Bass guitar makes me weak in the knees and gooey, and I want to be able to produce that effect in other people.
What is/are your favourite place/s to eat out?
- There are these restaurants on City Island in New York that have phenominal sea food at cheapass prices. My mom and I used to go there and pig out on lobster and clams and oysters and yum yum yum. Also, there was one time that my mom called me and said "I have a scathingly brilliant idea..." and told me that she was making reservations at a French restaurant for us. I had quail in raspberry sauce, and hazelnut souffle.
When have you been really frightened?
- I grew up in New York City, so I had a healthy respect for the dangers of being anywhere isolated from people, where violence could befall me. However, the only time I was really FRIGHTENED of living in New York was the time I was riding the subway at 10:30 pm (on my way to rocky horror). I was by myself, half reading my book (one never devotes full attention to reading on a subway, because one should always pay attention to what's going on in one's peripheral vision). There was a couple sitting across from me, a lady at the other end of the car, and these two 14ish looking boys. They both had one leg of their identical pants pushed up, and they were wearing identically colored shirts. They kept whispering to each other and looking around nervously. Suddenly, just before the train was to pull into Jay street station, One of them ran up to the man across from me, and slashed his face open with a razor blade, and the two of them got off the train a couple of seconds later. Imagine a look of bewilderment on a face that's gaping apart from a diagonal slash across it, and the owner of that face numbly reaching up to hold the pieces together, not quite understanding what happened. To my shame, I allowed this couple to blow off my help because they said they could get to the token booth at the next stop themselves. I allowed it because I didn't want to be left alone at high street station at 11 pm waiting for a train after I got someone to help them.
The other time I was really frightened was when it dawned on me that it wasn't just a sick joke when one of my coworkers told me that someone had flown a plane into the building in which my mom was supposed to be at work, where nothing worse than a really bad papercut should happen. For any of you who weren't on these forums last year, my mom got out alive, just so's ya know.
Hmmm, but that French restaurant I mentioned before was pretty close to the WTC... I wonder if it's still around.
Do you believe in some kind of afterlife?
- I believe that there's a possibility of an afterlife. My personal feeling is that it's arrogant to think that one knows "The Truth" about God, heaven, eternity, and related issues. I am humble enough to accept that I have no idea. I'd like to think that the god of my understanding and I have a pretty decent relationship, and whatever happens after death won't be bad. I really don't have much choice but to find out when it happens.
What is your favourite children's book?
- Pat the Bunny. I still remember Daddy's Scratchy Face.
What is your favourite time of year?
- Autumn in upstate New York, when the leaves are turning and it's apple-picking season. It's crisp and cold out, but warm clothes and a hot drink are all that's needed to maintain a perfect level of comfort.
Which job do you dislike most around the house?
- Any type of cleaning, but I'd rather clean than study. I think I sign up for these self-study courses through my job just to get housework done.
If you could be granted a single superpower, which would you choose?
- That Samantha Stevens nose-twitching thing would be pretty neato. I wonder if it's as distasteful to clean through telekinesis as it is to do it directly.
Are you tattooed? If so, where and with what? If not, would you, where, and with what?
- I currently have a very large green Pictish knot on my upper back. I adore it. However, as is the case with most bodyart enthusiasts I know, I have a regret about it. I wish I'd thought out an entire backpiece before getting the knot. I'd have had it done in a slightly different style, to go with an idea for the rest of my back that I'm discarding because it doesn't work with the style of the knot I have.
Who is the historical figure you would most like to converse with (language barriers aside)?
- Hmmm, I don't know if I'd want to converse with a historical figure. Historical figures are almost like fictional characters to me. To actually meet one would be like seeing the movie of your favorite book, and seeing the actor portray the character in a way entirely different to how you imagined him. I suppose I'd like to talk to Margaret Sanger, but though she and I share common thinking about some things, we're the products of two entirely different times. We'd probably have nothing to talk about. It would be like:
Margaret: So, abortion's legal now, huh?
Jess: Yes, but there are a lot of people who are trying to make it illegal.
Margaret: That's terrible. Think another hunger strike would work?
Jess: Probably not.
Margaret: I'm tired.
Jess: Yeah, me too.
Who from your own past would you most like to go back and talk to?
- I looked up a few old friends, and talked to some of them. I changed a lot, and they changed a lot, and trying to recapture the chemistry that made us close years ago was just depressing. I wish I could find my best friend from junior high, just to see if he's all right, but he's disappeared off the face of the planet.
Are you a cat person, or a dog person, if either?
- I like both, but I'm severely allergic. Also, I'm kind of enjoying the fact that my clothes don't have a vague pee aroma about them anymore, and that people can walk into my apartment without looking around to see what type of animal it is that's making That Smell.
What song do you tend to sing the most?
- Whatever I've been listening to a lot lately. For a while it was various Moxy songs, but my bf has gotten me into Cake recently, so I've been singing Cake songs lately. I made myself a compilation of songs by Cake and called it "Cake Mix". I'm so fucking clever.
Sum yourself up in one word...
- Impossible. No, I don't mean that's the word I'd use to sum myself up with, I mean that it's impossible to do. Stop laughing at me. Goddamnit.
If you be anywhere, doing anything, right now, what would that be?
- I'd be lying in a semi-dark room, relaxing and cuddling with all the people who make my brain smile, chatting about everything and nothing.
Have you ever been in love?
- Many times. A lot. Thoroughly. Painfully. It's worth it.
If you could go back in your life and fix one mistake you made, what would it be?
- Yikes. I don't know. I can't predict how my life would have played out if any of those roads had not been taken. I believe that I am who I am because of everything I've experienced, and I happen to like myself. Who knows if I'd like the product of the life I'd have led if I'd done this or that differently?
If you could change any of your physical features, would you, and which would it be?
- Like almost everyone else, I'd love to lose weight and tone up. That way I'd have a much prettier canvas to tattoo. :)
