I'm 19 years old. I am female. I like to read. Please recommend books that you have enjoyed and think I would enjoy (please see age and gender before recommending). Or recommend books to others in this thread. Also, include a breif description of the book or why you liked the book... just some reason why you're recommending it.

I have just finished reading A Brave New World by Aldus Huxley. I thought it was popcorntastic. Not the best written but a lot of stuff to make you think.

I would suggest Catch 22 but you are a girl.

I just picked up Jack Londons White Fang again after reading it for the first time aged 8. I wonder if it was a good as I remember. I will tell you once I have finished.

Obviously The Lord of the Rings, It's like going on holiday man.

Gullivers Travels is boring and very interesting by turns.

My GF loves Watership Down, she says it's deep man. I thought it a little gay.

Captain Corellis Mandolin is a fucking ace read, the end is a bit drawn out and depressing but then uplifting then ultimately shit. But I recommend this esp. to women.

-I would recommend absolutely anything by Kurt Vonnegut, but particularly "Cat's Cradle" or "Slaughterhouse 5".

He has a way of writing prose which can uplift you/move you to tears simply with a couple of well placed words. This guy is less an author, more a Professor of Human Nature.

-If you're into something a bit more "out-there", try something by Jeff Noon; "Nymphomation" is my personal favourite. He writes prose like freeform poetry, and his bizarre alternate-world scenarios are incredibly compelling.

Well, seeing as I am almost 19 and I am female, i can give you a few that i enjoyed.

Robin Cook - Abduction
It's like this cool book about Atlantis and shit... it was just ... i dunno, realy really awesome.
Robin Cook - Coma or Mindbend
I don't know about anyone else, but I like medical sci-fi, which is mostly what Cook writes (as he is a doctor). Coma is about, well, these people who go in for surgery and end up going into a coma, and this girl who tries to figure out how they go into this coma. Mindbend is ... well.. its about this company who is brainwashing their employees (OB-GYN) to give abortions so they can do testing on the fetus' for their products...
Goethe - The Sorrows of Young Werther
It just... sucks you in. I had to read this for my German History class, and basically, its set in old Germany, and this guy, Werther, is an artist who becomes completely infatuated with this girl, who is getting married to another, but she totally leads him on... anyway, it leads to his demise and its just an all around fun book! Hyok!

I don't know whether sci-fi is your thing or not - when it comes to books it's not mine as a rule, but even so, I read "Neuromancer" by William Gibson this Summer and was blown away - it's very good. Very. Good. I can't recommend it enough.

If you want something completely different, try "The Analects" by Confucius - it's not very long, but it's full of clever insights and ancient wisdom.

May I also suggest the Xanth series by Peirs Anthony. You're probably not into fantasy books, but these are the best:

I'm sorry. I read alot.

My current reading list:

"The Mythical Man Month" by Frederick Brooks - This is about software project management, so you'd hate this.

"Dune" by Frank Herbert - again, I doubt you'd be into this.

"Hagakure" I'm also flicking through verses in this. Especially the ones where people get cut up for no reason. Good but I doubt you'd like this.

"Notes from a Small island" by Bill Bryson - Also a good book about an American travelling in Britain. Read this.
Dani's reading "Single White Vampire" - I don't know who that's by, but she seems to like it. I think it's a romantic comedy type book. Yeah, read this.

Terry Pratchett's Discworld series, you might like if you're into fantasy stuff - it's quite easy going and funny.

I've read the Giver. It was forced on us in 7th grade. I hated the ending. Then again, I hate the ending to most books people consider to be the "best literature". That may give you somewhere to go with recommending books. I'll post some recommendations of my own later.

I'm also going to recommend Kurt Vonnegut, the man is a genius. Also, anything by Christopher Brookmyre and, if you like detective books, Jeffrey Deaver. When it comes to the classics, I've always liked the Great Gatbsy, Lord of the Flies and anything by Orwell.

I'd suggest you avoid the Piers Anthony books unless you like the idea of an entire series of books based on truly awful Kaufman-esque puns.

I just finished reading the Curious incident of the dog in the night-time by Mark Haddon. It's written from the perspective of an autistic boy who is trying to solve a mystery. It's interesting because he doesn't have the ability to describe certain emotions so you have to read between the lines. I cried in one part while I was sitting in Papa John's waiting for my pizza. No lie. It's a thoughtful book.

I've been reading The Descent by Jeff Long while i do cardio. It's a good, simple, sci-fi sort of book about the discovery of trails under the Earth's crust and the rush to colonize underneath there.

I third anything by Vonnegut. I really enjoyed Blackbeard or Bagombo's Snuff Box. Bagombo's is just a bunch of short stories.
