"The Cocoanuts" (1929)

Good early-sound debut by The Marx Brothers. Along with their next film, "Animal Crackers" (also based on one of their plays), a good chance to see a hint of what their stage shows must have been like.

Trivia: all of the newspapers and other documents in the movie look soggy because they had to soak them all in water to keep the rustling noise from messing up the primitive sound.

Trivia: When Chico busts Harpo and "Bob" out of jail, he forgets his lines but the take is used anyway. It goes something like this:

Chico: We gotta hurry! Polly's about to get married!
Bob: Married? To who?
Chico: Uh, she...she marry him.
Bob: Who is she going to marry?
Chico: Polly. He marry Polly.
Bob: Polly's going to marry Harvey Yates?
Chico: Yeah, atsa right!

Then, when they all crawl through the hole Chico has cut in the bars, Harpo gets his foot stuck and the scene fades with him making faces as he tries to pull it loose.

I saw Team America on Saturday. It wwas pretty goddamn funny, and lampooned the shit out of the left and the right. Mostly the actual left, but a lot of the ideas of the right.

I LOVE the guys from South Park.

I literally slept through Sky Captain, despite the ear-shattering cineplex volume level. I woke up for a few seconds several times, and that was enough to get the plot.

Do The Right Thing (1989, Spike Lee)

Perhaps it's a bit from... a while... ago, but it's still a good movie. Aside from all the racial plots, it's got fantastic character development and well done cinematography. My only beef is the crack-crazy intro sequence which, despite all playing of Public Enemy, sucks balls.

What others say about boorite!

Saw Child's Play 2 last night for the first time since I was a teenager. Turns out it sucks way worse than I remembered. The parents actually get into an argument twice using the same dialogue each time. And then the kids try to escape Chucky by crawling through dangerous factory machines that threaten to mutilate them eight different ways while slowing them down drastically. WTF?

Arsenic and Old Lace:

1944, an oldie, but still a goodie. Basically, a just married nephew, played by Cary Grant, finds out that his two sweet old aunts murder people and bury them in their basement, which is what they consider a nice thing to do. Much hilarity ensues. It was based on a Broadway play of the same name.

The Day After Tomorrow

Saw it a while ago. Not a great plot, but the special effects were nice. Completely ridiculous story in general, but it was a good little disaster movie. I liked it a lot better than any movies about meteorites or volcanoes. I guess that counts for something.

The Matrix Revolutions

None of the deep plot of the original, sappy happy ending, and a pussy ass win by Neo. I wish he'd just kicked some serious bootay, destroying all the agent smiths, and creating sort of a cold-war peace with the robots.

Of course, they did kill the progressively uglier every movie Trinity. She was hot in the original, but in the second two, it looked like Ted was fucking Skeletor.

Monsieur Ibrahim

SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS AHEAD

Ok, it's in French with English subtitles, so no one's going to rent the damned thing anyway. And the "spoilers" I'm about to reveal will only function as such for slow learners who don't rent French movies anyway. You see, several things are clear at the outset:

1. Momo's father is a serious asshole.

2. Momo's father will get fired.

3. Momo's father will die.

4. Monsieur Ibrahim will become Momo's father figure.

5. Monsieur Ibrahim will be fatally injured in a fiery car crash.

If you don't see these plot points coming from way over the horizon, then you haven't seen enough movies. Still, getting there is fun, in a French-movie sort of way. We know these things are coming-- the interesting question is how Momo will negotiate them. And Omar Sharif's screen presence carries us through some stretches of glacial pacing. Also, there are plenty of hookers. Any movie featuring Omar Sharif and hookers is worth at least one look.
