There are two types of people in this world:

1)Those of us who just got back from seeing They Might Be Giants in concert

2)The rest of you sorry fuckers.

Neener.

It was about time. I've been a fan for over 10 years, and have *almost* seen them 3 times. Something happened each time to prevent me from actually seeing them. I was sure something would happen this time, too.

Not only did nothing happen to prevent me from seeing them, but I got autographs from John Flansburgh and two of the other musicians in the group, both of whom are named Dan.

Opening for TMBG was Mucka Ferguson. They have been shown on Premium Blend on Comedy Central doing "MC Speller". The rest of their stuff is even better. I bought their CDs and got autographs from all three of the group members on their new CD.

Pretty kickass night for someone who came home early from work because she was feeling sick. I'm glad I already asked for tomorrow off. I need to recuperate.

I'm glad someone gets enjoyment out of concerts. I saw Tenacious D last night. I have solidified my stance that I loathe live music in large venues. And sporting events too, I should add. I don't know what's wrong with me. All I end up doing is sitting there wishing I could just leave and go home. Argh. I feel like an outcast.

I saw TMBG at Tipitina's in New Orleans back in 1991, I think. NastyPope, the day Milli Vanilli can play two trumpets simultaneously, or even one, I might agree with you. TMBG are monster musicians.

Ahhh, but TMBG, even after 15 years of touring and at least half of that being in relative fame, still plays at small venues, and still for a reasonable price.

I cringe to think of the firestorm you may have just called down. I will try not to contribute.

I am not equipped to discuss the band's level of skill or talent in terms of music. I can't play anything but the kazoo and don't pretend to know what sort of chord combinations impress the critics. All I can say is "I quite like their tunes." I do know that the band members can claim to be able to play a wider variety of instruments than most people.

In lyrical and literary terms, however, I have no reservations about proclaiming TMBG to be among the foremost artists of their generation. That's what truly excites me about their songs.

I'm with Gabe on the subject of concerts. I don't know why I would pay money to stand (or get pushed around) for hours while listening to music that I could hear better and more clearly on my home stereo system. I'm all for live music, but not in large venues. That said, TMBG put on a good show. They're one of the few bands I'd pay to see in concert, and the only band I've seen live more than once.

Now, perhaps you meant to say "Tenacious D" instead of "They Might Be Giants". That I could understand. Gabe and crabby are, respectively, the second and third people I have ever heard express appreciation for the D. I don't have a strong opinion on them myself. Some of their stuff is good, some isn't, really nothing to write home about.

Uh-oh. Did we start the music thread again?

There are quite a few more acts than TMBG (not enough, mind you) that do/did put on a show worth attending, even with 20-70 thousand others. I'm not going to fan the flames by making a list from my experiences, but it's too bad you haven't run into more of them.

No argument here. I'm sure they exist, I just don't seem to find them.

Now that I think about it, I did see Rage Against the Machine twice. But the second time it was in a stadium, so I could sit down and drink a tub of Coke while I watched/listened. Rob Zombie was at that show too. Interesting fireworks, but I don't know that I'd go to see them a second time.

I love live music - big venue, small venue, medium-sized venue, bunch of friends jamming in the back room, love it, love it, love it, love it. I haven't been to a helluva lot of huge stadium shows (Bily Joel twice, and Riverdance) but I love a good pub band. We have a favourite Melbourne-based musical comedy trio called Tripod who we see live whenever we get the chance. Last count, we had seen them about twenty times. Brilliant music, piss-funny comedy. Have a look at http://3pod.com/ if you feel the inclination, download some sound files, and curse the fact that you are not in Melbourne.

Oh, and all your base are belong to those two guys named John. Last time they were here in Melbourne, my wife and I found out about it literally the day after their final show. We were cut, I can tell you. I also adore Peter Gabriel's music, and I have missed him in concert twice. *grumble*

I saw Gabriel live in 1986. Other than Grateful Dead shows, I have never seen a performer hold the audience quite as well as Gabriel. It was mesmerizing. My only regret from that show was that he didn't play "Rhythm of the Heat."

That being said, nothing compares to the Dead playing live (heh heh), at least that I have seen. They had a sixth sense for the audience vibe.

If I could get hold of a time machine, I would attend The Who's classic concert in Leeds. If you haven't heard their Live at Leeds CD, do so. One of the best concert albums ever recorded. In one famous (amongst the fans) bit, Pete Townshend plays a duet with his own echo bouncing off the back of the hall.

Amazing stuff...

Oh, and The Rhythm and The Heat is one of my favourite PG tracks. That whole album, PG4, stickered with the title "Security" in the US, is my favourite of his, and a lot of his fans.

It's my favorite, too. I'm also rather fond of the soundtracks Gabriel did for "Birdy" and "The Last Temptation of Christ" (that soundtrack was labeled "Passion" by Geffen).

Actually, John Flansburgh has always stuck around to sign autographs at their shows. TMBG is all about being grateful to their fans.

They're not washed up nobodies, anyway. Their last album is not as good as previous albums, but they're definitely not washed up nobodies.

At this time , id like to announce just how much i hate you and wish that youd become involved in a very unpleasant accident with a combine harvester.

Ive been a TMBG fan for about 12 years , and , being a brit , they dont play concerts here.

While in the US a couple of years back , i was SUPPOSED to go catch one of their concerts when they played in PA , but the now ex-girlfriend's car broke down coming home from work that day.

And oh how i felt like an outboard part of man that day.

comparing TMBG to milli vanilli was a bit harsh, but when I hear them described as great musicians I get a bit irked. Having been a music major in college my musical tastes tend to be towards the more complex musicians where the talent is often unrefuted. For example, the last live show I saw, and the very best i've ever seen, was Bela Fleck and the Flecktones. Each member is arguably the best of their instrument and the intricacy of their writing/playing is phenomenal. Back to TMBG, they are talented, but tend to keep that talent a bit restrained by writing tunes that are more catchy than complex. Still, its up to the listener to decide what they like and that is what matters most.

Yeah, I have another friend who raves about Bela Fleck and the Flecktones. It seems people who are fans are generally hardcore Flecktone fans, and everyone else just pretty much is not familiar with them.

Cult bands are cool. They move just enough units to stay in the record company's black ink column, and are just big enough to be interesting, and small enough to not be dipshit rock stars.

Plus, they're a lot easier to mix well because they don't play cement bathtub arenas.

That's one of the cool things about the Australian music scene. With an entire population of fewer than twenty million people, nobody ever gets really truly massive, unless they do a Savage Garden / AC-DC / INXS and bugger off overseas. As a result, self-adoring rock divas are fairly rare over here. Not unheard of, unfortunately, but still pretty rare.

ya know, the first time i saw TMBG (when the show kinda sucked), i waited an hour backstage with my copy of "Then," only to see john and john run right past the couple-dozen people waiting and right into their waiting car. it kinda pissed me off, so the second time (when the show kicked ass) i didn't try. hopefully they'll come through vegas sometime so i can see them again; i'll wait, now that i've heard about your good experience (:

they are still quite possibly my favorite band, and i disagree with you about the new album--i really REALLY liked it. way more than the first time i heard factory showroom, anyway.

oh, and permy--they're hitting europe after their current US tour. i'm not sure where they're playing in the UK, but i'm sure they'll make at least one stop there--they've always been bigger there than here, i'm led to believe.

and finally, the nice thing about TMBG, gabe, is that they never play big venues, in my experience anyway. they always play little intimate places, and they always screw around with the songs enough that it's not, as is generally the case with other bands, like listening to their album with a bunch of other spectators.
