This rule, too, is ambiguous. I suspect TBZ took it to mean that all dialogue boxes had to contain the same number of words as each another, but that there was a separate number for thought and narrative boxes. So under that interpretation, it's legal. skagg's rule depends on how you read it, too.

As before, voters should decide for themselves whether rules have been broken. But I'd say that strip is legal enough.

I ran afoul of a rule similar to this in the What are the rules of this Contest Contest. I tested the strips on several machines, on several different browsers, at four different resolutions, and the text in the strips appeared identical in each one. Yet FPD claimed he was seeing them differently.

The only thing I can think of that is affecting this is that FPD has set his browser to override the stylesheet of the page. Because on every machine I have tried, changing the font size setting on the browser changes the text for the strip title, but none of the actual text within the strip.

There is one sure-fire way I know of to change the formatting of the text in the strips - change your overall Windows font size. I have been using Quentin (OgO, my housemate)'s PC for the last few weeks. He is legally blind, having about 20% of normal vision in one eye and about 10% in the other, so he has his font size cranked. Dialogue boxes in strips look less like text boxes than text chimneys.

I hated making strips in that environment, as I could never be sure that my strips would not stretch the strip frames in a regular view.

After a huge flamewar between myself and NastyPope, it has now become an unofficial rule that, when voting for one of two strips, you should never say publicly that they both sucked and you aren't voting for either. This applies to both insulting versions (Bazilla) or matter-of-fact versions (fpd). If you want to abstain, then just abstain. Make up an excuse or just don't vote. Telling people their comic(s) suck(s) is just not necessary.

Sure, people break or bend the rules, and you can comment on that. You can also make constructive suggestions, but just saying that neither was good enough to deserve your vote is nasty.
