I saw Zappa Plays Zappa tonight.
Strictly Commercial Moment: Paying $39.95 plus $10 "convenience fee" plus $2.50 venue fee to see Dweezil playing Frank basically made this the most expensive cover band I've ever seen.
The Torture Never Stops Moments: While I was happy with the performance for the most part, a few things irked me.
1) Can you call it self-indulgence when you do a guitar solo that goes on way too long, but it's your dad's music not yours?
2) They played Billy The Mountain which is an obscure, 40 minute song that isn't that well known for a reason. There are other theatrical Zappa songs they could have done instead of this tedious one.
3) Zappa's music is so big, it suffers from a band this small playing it. The sax player was particularly weak without a larger horn section.
Zombie Wolf Moment: Dweezil said he was touring Frank's music because its not played on the radio and this is the only way to expose it to the younger generation. Perhaps he couldn't tell with the stage lights in his eyes, but I was one of the youngest people there at the tender age of 40.
Willie the Pimp Moment: Ray White was awesome on vocals. He sounded just as good as he did in the 70's.
Anyway, for someone who was too young to see Frank Zappa, it was a worthwhile show. The band needs to tighten up a bit, but the music is still outstanding.
