Metallica was the up and coming thing when I was in high school. That should frighten anyone who is still discussing Metallica. It should frighten Metallica.

Favorite orchestral accompaniment in a more or less popular song: Neil Young's "A Man Needs a Maid." Lousy bridge, though.

I don't know if they count, but the accompaniment that Belle and Sebastian have is genius I think.

Many bands use symphonic/orchestraic elements in their music these days, and do it a hell of a lot better than metallica. Dimmu Borgir is the most recent example I can think of, with the latest album feeling like a very evil soundtrack at times. I don't consider that a bad thing. All the Stravinski I've ever heard feels like soundtrack music too.

metallica and Slayer decimated the metal scene with the newer albums, both leaning toward hard rock/crap. Slayer's "God Hates Us All" is almost a masterpiece compared to anything metallica did from Load onward.

The newest metallica album, at least, what I've heard of it, sounds like angsty emocore/mallcore shouting and bullshit. There is nothing metal about it. It's more related to Nirvana and Pearl Jam than to any metal bands.

I keep hearing people bitching about metal being dead, or no good bands being around. I see people saying that Slipknot and metallica carry the metal torch. this is such bullshit. Mentioned in this thread already has been one of the most brilliant newer metal bands, Nevermore. It's not even just that, some of the older bands still exist. Blind Guardian started in 1989, Iron Maiden and Judas Priest are both still around kicking ass and releasing awesome albums. Dio still knows how to rock as well as he did in the 80s. Iced Earth, Symphony X, Manowar, Helloween, Testament, King Diamond, Therion, all still making great albums. These guys carry on the older torch, while other bands have created a new flame to shine on. Dimmu Borgir, Cradle of Filth, Arcturus, Vintersorg, and slews of others continue to make great music. Why do people hang onto old, crappy, boring crap or latch onto the newest pop trendy crap when there's so much good stuff out there?

And for the record: Metallica before Load = metal. metallica after Load = not metal. Black Sabbath = Metal. Led Zep = Hard rock with metal songs. Iron Maiden = More metal and any band on the radio today, possibly the quintissential metal band. Judas Priest = Another candidate for quintissential metal band. AC/DC = Hard rock, great for parties.
Blues-based or not, Black Sabbath was metal. Distorted guitars and all, metallica is no longer metal. It is angsty shit rock.

And in case anyone noticed, yes, I am aware that I didn't capitalize the name "metallica" most of the time. I think of it as another band, and that's the only way I can differentiate between the two without calling them something lame like "Sucktallica!" or "Craptallica!".

And I think Slayer may be dead. Black Sabbath is on life support. Iron Maiden and Judas Priest have a few more years left, but the members are starting to really show their age. Still rock harder than metallica though.

Peaches en Regalia by Zappa is a ridiculous and awesome song, speaking of Zappa.

Tom Waits, who was referenced somewhere in this discussion, is one of those guys that keeps on releasing quality albums. I dig Blood Money(2002) and Real Gone (2004) almost as much as I dig Rain Dogs (1985) and Small Change (1976) despite the stylistic differences. I argue that he can sing real well, but for some reason decided in '85 that barking and coughing would be more fun and has never looked back.

Tom Waits is pretty cool. He needs to do a song called "Brains" where all he says is "BRAAAAAAINS!"

Sounds like we pretty much agree on metallica, then, but please don't compare their recent crapfest St. Anger to anything by Nirvana or Pearl Jam.

St. Anger sounded more like MOTORHEAD than anything else, and that's an insult coming from me.

Motorhead had thier moments, when they weren't writing stuff solely to bolster Lemmy's invincible tough guy image.

I might even rank Orgasmatron among my favorites songs (or movie props, for that matter).

Yes, Neil worried about that himself, as he was intentionally going overboard to elaborately drive home the simplest point. He was afraid he'd failed and just overblown it. He asked Dylan what he thought and got Dylan's blessing.

I think Neil Young tends to disbelieve any song he can't get over by himself, with a guitar or piano, and maybe a harmonica. On "A Man Needs a Maid," you can hear him entertaining the opposite possibility. You can hear him going against his own grain. For the casual listener it could be boring. For anyone who knows what Neil Young is about, it's a statement.

Because we know Neil can get his songs over by himself, or with a rock band, or with a church organ, or with an orchestra. Probably doesn't matter to most people.

If his arrangements were always megastudio bloat productions, I'd call him a fraud. But if anyone knows simplicity and eschewed it by choice in a particular case, it's him.

Moody Blues and Neil Young were after much the same thing with their orchestral accompaniments. Some listeners with punk or folk or roots allegiances might object to how "overblown" the arrangements are. All this intrumental flourish is out of proportion to the ordinary sentiment being expressed. But that contrast is exactly the point. In the most mundane statements lie colossal sentiments.

So, in "A Man Needs a Maid," Neil Young accompanies his first and most searching thoughts with the sparest piano part:

My life is changing in so many ways
I don't know who to trust anymore
There's a shadow running through my days
like a beggar going from door to door

(btw, if any of you have ever got off lines like these, please contact your nearest talent agent.)

Right here, Neil changes the subject, going from very general to very particular:

I was thinking that maybe I'd get a maid
Find a place nearby for her to stay
Just someone to keep my house clean
Fix my meals and go away

Now, the orchestra:

A maid
A man needs a maid

Do you see the counterpoint, not just of notes and thickness of notes, but of ideas? One descends as the other ascends, and a point is made: Huge sentiment in a simple utterance. A man needs a maid. A Carlsbad Caverns' worth of loneliness in that sentence. Only an orchestra could really convey it.

That's my take on it in a nutshell, anyway.

I'm just wondering if this thread pertains just to music with lyrics, or if instrumental music can be involved as well. In which case I'd like to bring up pretty much any song by Ashley MacIsaac or Leahy.
