Samuel Smith's Oatmeal Stout is possibly the best beer ever made. It's pretty expensive, but it comes in a large bottle and is all fancy-pants packaged, and it one of the best things to ever pass my lips.
I also like the selection of the local microbrewery, Sierra Nevada. I don't care much for the Crystal Wheat, but most of the other stuff from SN is decent enough. The IPA and unfiltered wheat are both great beers for decent prices.
I'll drink cheap "beer" if nothing else is available. I prefer better stuff, but I'm not a complete snob. I will absolutely not drink Budweiser (political issues), but Coors, Miller and Corona are okay when you're just hanging out with friends. I also love Guiness, no matter how commercial and well-known it may be.
Finally, light beer is a no-no for me. I'd rather drink a girlie beer like Smirnoff Ice than drink light beer. That crap tastes like seltzer that someone tossed a slice of bread into, shook it up, filtered out the pieces of bread, and served up what poured out.
Sam Smith's Oatmeal Stout, on the other hand, will grab your tongue, pull it out of your mouth, and beat you with it. It's rich, nice smooth texture, and tastes quite decent even at slightly warm temperatures.
And if you want a beer (not talking about Malt Liquor here) that will kick your ass and take your name, try Piraat Ale. I believe it's somewhere around 13% alcohol. It also has a slight sweet/bitter dichotomy going on, so it's not for the inexperienced. I took a swig of it when I was still just drinking Guiness and Budweiser, and it kicked my ass.
And for the love of all things intoxicating, next time someone calls that soda-water shit "beer", smack them for me, please? If it's clear and fruity, it's not beer.
