Well, I'm finally getting one of these thingies, mainly so I can listen to podcasts while I'm at the gym. I'm getting some kind of car mount / cassette adapter as well (yes, I'll be a danger to everyone on the road while I flip through my playlist!).

Anyway, I was going to go for a 6gb mini, but Amazon is selling the 20gb 4th generation model for the same price ($240) so getting less space for the same price seems kind of silly.

Any advice on accessories, etc.? I'm thinking of the DLO TransPod Direct for the car. I've heard enough about the FM transmitters that I want to avoid the, so I'll go with the cassette adapter and lighter-mount deal.

The FM transmitter is a "nice to have" if you're going round to someone else's house and want to play songs to your friends. However, as you no doubt know by now, in a car it is pretty hopeless since you lose your 'station' all the time and there is a huge amount of interference.

I bought the Apple accessory that plugs in between headphones and iPod which allows you to skip tracks, change volume and play/pause without having to use the iPod itself. This could prove useful for you in the gym where you don't want to have to keep getting the iPod out to stop/start it etc. with sweaty palms.

Avoid the "iSkins" because although they sound nice in theory, in practice they get covered in fluff and dust, thereby making your prized possession look horrible and nasty to touch. If you want to protect it, get a leather case - or just no case if, like me, you're not bothered about scratches and prefer the feel of a naked iPod.

Thanks.

I'm still debating the Mini versus the 20gb iPod, mainly because this accessory would work so well for me:

http://www.tentechnology.com/products/products_flexdock.php

My concern with the mini, of course, is that once I start really using it I'm not going to want to pull music out of it, and wish I'd gotten the 20gb. On the other hand, 6gb is still a good amount of space. How are people doing hitting the limits of their space?

I've got a 40Gb iPod and have already gone beyond 17Gb in total so far. I don't claim to speak for the average music listener, though.

Exactly the same here--17gb out of 40. I have a ton of music I haven't converted to mp3 because I don't really listen to it anymore, but I'm still adding stuff all the time and I'm glad I don't have to worry about space. My last mp3 player was 20 and I found myself deleting stuff to upload other music.

I've got 3.5 days of music (1405 songs) and I've used about 5.5 gigs out of a possible 13.9. It's a 15gb ipod, but since some gigabytes are used for settings and games, it's got a little less than that for actual music, which makes me think you should go with the 20gb instead of the mini.

I think, therefore I make comments on a forum.

CowTipper's got a good point - a lot of people don't realise that the so-called "4Gb" mini doesn't actually have 4Gb of space for music. I'd say it's always best to overestimate the amount you'll need, especially if the price difference isn't huge. As for portability, the size differential between the 'ordinary' model and the mini is not particularly vast.

Personally, I've always thought that the principle of the iPod is to be able to carry all the music you want with you at all times, and not have to sacrifice some music for the sake of newer material.

Take it from me, I had the 4gb before I had the 20gb and it was just a pain to have to always decide what you wanted to remove before you added. I'm at 16.7 gb out of 20 already, I may need to upgrade soon, but for the time being it's great. It's not like you plan on listening to ALL your music at one point, but with the Mini, say you're out travelling and you really want to listen to this one song, which happens to be a song you didn't transfer on there, it's unimaginabley irritating.

Also for that flexDock, I have a feeling you could mod it yourself to work with the 20GB. See, the mini and the, well, not mini ipods have the same contact on the bottom. I'm pretty sure the only thing that makes the flexDock mini-specific is that it will have 2 small tabs on it that also insert onto the bottom of the mini. They aren't electrical at all, they're just there for stability.(see image below) The larger ipods don't have this. Perhaps, if you're feeling up to it, you could make the flexDock work with a 20gb or higher by simply shaving off the tabs.

aformentioned stability tabs

Thanks. I've been leaning toward the "You know you're not going to want to take music out of it once you put it in once you put it in." point of view, and you've pretty much confirmed it.

Any thoughts on cases, headphones?

As I said previously, the silicone/rubber skins aren't very good. Look for a leather case if you are keen on having something to protect your iPod. Also, if you *are* going to go down the route of getting a case, buy it at the same time as (or before) your iPod purchase - the silver backing will get scratched almost the moment you take off the protective seal.

The headphones which come with all iPods are pretty good, though if you live (or work in my case) in a less-than-salubrious area you might want to invest in non-white headphones so that it isn't quite so obvious what you're carrying around in your pocket.

Glad you asked about headphones. Nothing bothers me more than seeing those trademark white earbuds. I don't understand how people will spend $200 on a music player only to listen to it with $8 headphones.

My recommendation:

Skullcandy SkullCrushers
I just bought these. Have had them roughly a week now, and I know for sure that if anything ever happens to them, I'm definitely buying another pair. Traditionally, headphones have a single 30mm driver that handles all the frequencies, which is usually pretty good, though it's not nearly as versatile as you'd think. These headphones have 2 seperate 30mm drivers, one handles Mid/High, and the other is essentially a Subwoofer. It is absolutely incredible. You can literally feel the music. These headphones already have influenced me to pass up 3 rides home just so I could listen to them more. They're reportedly comparable to $300 Sennheiser, but roughly 1/5 the price. Go to Best Buy, pick them up for around $70. Hell, get two, just in case. You can trust me on this, too, cause I've owned a LOT of headphones in the past, including AKG studio monitors.

Only bad part about these headphones is that they'll eat your battery faster. I recommend either a headphone amp($70, the better choice because it makes it so your headphones don't use ANY of the ipod's battery, plus you can make your headphones louder if you need) or one of the many third party ipod battery packs(or both!) that boost the ipod's overall life to about 250 % of the factory quoted life.

I went through the same question fuzzy, in the end I went for the 20gb ipod photo. The photo function is worth that little extra.

But if it were a straight fight between the 6gb and the 4th gen 20gb Id go for the 20gb every time.

My theory on music is there are only 5000 songs in the world worth listening to hence the 20gb is spot on.

plus you may find you want to use it as a portable hard drive aswell, which can be dead handy.

I have the 60gb version...And I have about 43 gb onit right now. Yes, i'm a music fanatic.

I recommend the iPOD remote and the podfreq for your car/stereo (www.podfreq.com) instead of the Apple iTrip.

If you're at all curious as to who I am, i can be found in this comedy short film thats all about the iPOD age. I play the "runner." enjoy. it's pretty funny...

I like the manly feel of my 20gb.

Seeing that the new 20gb color ones are out, I see that the 20gb b&w ones are nicely discounted. Seeing as I don't really need it for photos, it seems like the right way to go.

Nano doesn't seem like such a good deal when you compare. Since it won't be on my person all the time, the form factor isn't worth giving up the space.
