A friend of mine named Dan is hooked on World of Warcraft (and yet holds down a full time job and has time for a marriage and a baby - I suspect he's Gallifreyan) and the other day he was asked by a female party leader to set up voice communication so they could communicate more efficiently in a fight.
So, Dan downloaded the plug-in and got it set up, but when he logged in all he could hear was a teenage boy saying constant swear words. He typed this into chat, and the sweary teenager said, "Hey, Dan? That you?" Dan said, "I thought you were a girl!"
Anyway, once he got over the literally constant stream of swearing, the voice chat proved to be quite useful, but later on he started being irritated by some other guy on the same voice server saying "Oh, I am so leet!" every two or three minutes. Dan had no idea some people actually say "leet"/"1337" in real life conversation.
After a while he finally commented, "You know, just saying it doesn't make it true." The "leet" guy replied, "Good point! Lol!"
Yes, he said "lol", to rhyme with "toll".
*sigh*
The human race is doomed.
