How do I add one for my account?  Every pic I have is claimed to be too large even after I reduce it by 50%.

Wish I could help, but it's been about 12 years since I added my avatar and my memory isn't that good.

How large is it?  Can you post it here so we can see it?

If the site's saying it's "too large" then I'd assume it's either taller or wider than 60 pixels.  I don't think there's a limit in terms of bytes.

I just went to a site that provides ONLY 60x60 avatars.  But still when I try to install one I get the "too large" message.  What up wit dat?

It could be that the error message does not accurately describe the actual problem.  Maybe the image is on a site that doesn't allow direct linking.  I don't know; I'm completely guessing here.

Quick google search yeilded this site, seems relatively straight forward to use;

 

http://www.resizeyourimage.com/

 

Upload your image to it, resize to 60 pixels by 60 (use the zoom as well to bring it down to correct proportion) download the result

 

Once you've done that you need somewhere to upload it;

 

All the cool kids these days appear to be using http://imgur.com/

Upload the file you created and get the link.  Should stay live as long as its being viewed, which as an avatar should be fairly often.

 

Alternatively use a site like photobucket.com (though you have to sign up for that one)

 

 

Just tried imgur, and it seems to be working good guns, if my crazy bastardised kaddar avatar is anything to go on.

Same thing happened to me once, but setting it to 59 x 59 pixels fixed it. tbh it was years ago, but I've gone 1 under ever since.

Give that a whirl, or if you post a copy of the image here I'd be happy to take a look :)
