I prefer Biped's blue period, myself. It is during this time that his work became less exuberant and more sober in tone, reflecting personal tragedy. The dark forces of nature made way for quiet, rural scenes. With these changes, Biped distanced himself from earlier works and current fashion, which increasingly inclined toward heavier use of recurring characters and forum in-jokes.

Further, one can hardly ignore madingo's red period, a repulsively smelly abomination upon the very face of God himself. Yet, one wonders at the convenient irony evidenced by the fact that mandingo is perfectly anagrammed as god in man. Surely, the Fates point their craggy fingers and laugh at us all.

Brevity, as Shakespeare said, is the soul of wit, and indeed, beneath the strip's blunt simplicity lies a subtle sophistication. The joke hinges on dramatic irony. The protagonist expends heroic effort in pursuit of an ambition that he fails to realize because he cannot see how he comes across to others. While we chuckle at his naivete, we also sympathize with it, as we all share mankind's inability "to see ourselves as others see us" (see Burns, "To a Louse").

This tragicomic flaw is further developed in the sequel, where the protagonist mislays the blame for his disappointment on the goddess of chance.
