This is a long-winded bitch that I've posted in FGH because I'm sure it'll turn into a fight
Living in NYC I've had the opportunity to observe a shit-load of people all the damn time. Over the years I've developed a theory that smokers litter more than non-smokers. A lot more. There is a trash can in sight of EVERY location in Manhattan and yet people are dropping trash at their feet constantly. This bugs the shit out of me. I was just on my porch and saw this fella talking with some friends while finishing some napkin wrapped food. When he was done he looked at the napkin, looked around briefly, balled it up and dropped it on the sidewalk. He then lit up a smoke and continued to chat with his friends.
I suspect that years of casually, if not unconsciously, flicking cigarette butts on the ground smokers have become numb to the act of littering.
After a couple minutes chatting and smoking, the guy also dropped his cigarette butt.
Smoking's bad blah, blah, blah. That first and second-hand smoke debate is beat to death. My parents smoked and it did me no harm. What I'm concerned about is if the habits associated with smoking produce a more lax attitude towards other social violations like littering.
What do you think?
